Optimization of the Preparation of Thin Hydrogel Layers Based on Biocompatible Polymers
Vacková, Barbora ; Pekař, Miloslav (referee) ; Kalina, Michal (advisor)
The aim of this master thesis deals with the optimization of the preparation of thin hydrogel films based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with the possibility of incorporating suitable additives (polyelectrolytes, plasticizers, etc.) into the structure of the prepared film to modify its properties. DEAE-Dextran hydrochloride and polyglutamic acid (PGA) were used as polyelectrolytes. The basic characterization of the properties was performed on modified films, which were compared with pure PVA films. The films were characterized by thickness, swelling ability, barrier properties, tensile properties, specific surface area, antimicrobial tests, and thermogravimetric analysis. The swelling ability of PVA/PGA films was very high, which may be a disadvantage for their use in the packaging industry. Swelling increases the amount of water in the matrix of the PVA film, what leads to a higher growth of microorganisms and to degradation of thin film. The water vapor transmission rate was greatly affected by the addition of a plasticizer. The small specific surface area of the films indicates a smooth surface that promotes good barrier properties. Films with the addition of a plasticizer showed relatively good mechanical properties. The values of tensile strength, elongation and elastic modulus were comparable to commercially available films such as polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE). Based on all experiments, PVA, PVA/DEAEDextran films and their variants with the addition of glycerol as a plasticizer were evaluated as the best candidates for the use of these films as packaging materials. The follow-up work could be dealing with the optimization of PVA films for oxygen permeability. Furthermore, the possibilities of using these films in the packaging industry based on the relative humidity of the environment, could be defined as other interesting area of future research.
Study on the Reactivity of Extracellular Polysaccharides Produced by Bacteria
Vacková, Barbora ; Smilek, Jiří (referee) ; Kalina, Michal (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with the reactivity of bacterial extracellular polysaccharides. The experimental part deals with extracellular polysaccharide FucoPol. Due to the presence of acyl groups, the polymer has an anionic character and can promote interactions with other positively charged substances. In this bachelor thesis interactions of FucoPol with metals were studied. For measuring, an isothermal titration calorimeter was used, and sorption experiments were performed. The main objective of the work was optimization of conditions for measuring interactions between metals and FucoPol. Connection of metal cations to FucoPol matrix were confirmed by titration calorimetry and sorption experiments. The interaction rate was different depending on the metal which was used. Co2+, Pb2+ a Zn2+ ions showed very weak binding, otherwise Cu2+ a Fe3+ ions had high affinity for the studied biopolymer. FucoPol, as a biodegradable biopolymer, can be in the future one of important industrially produced polysaccharides. It could be used for packaging, biofuel production and production of anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting drugs.
Slovak Ladies' Chamber Orchestra (1969-2013): A music historical probe
Pisárová, Pavla ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Vacková Gillies, Barbora (referee)
The bachelor thesis is the first in-depth exploration of the hitherto unexamined activities of the first Slovak Ladies' Chamber Orchestra (1969-2013). The thesis delves into the personal stories of the female musicians, the orchestra's activities, and its evolution over the years within the framework of musical life and gender politics in Slovakia. This contextualization serves to elucidate the orchestra's activities. The research relies on interviews conducted with Elena Šarayová-Kováčová (1943), the first professional Slovak female conductor and founder of the orchestra, ten members of the orchestra, and information extracted from the surviving chronicles. The study adopts the methodology of oral history and draws on a feminist-informed historiography of contemporary music history. Although they were professional musicians who had studied their instruments at conservatories and earned a living in symphony orchestras, the Ladies' Chamber Orchestra never became a full-time occupation for them and was not always perceived as a professional orchestra. Nevertheless, my research indicates a significant improvement in the status of women in classical music during their tenure. The thesis contributes to the ongoing research regarding the involvement and role of women in musical life in Slovakia,...
Maghrebian testimonies: an analysis of the literary strategies used to verbalize the traumatic experiences of woman writers and the impact of their works on contemporary Francophone society
Vacková, Barbora ; Janišová, Míla (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor's thesis will approach the issue of the status of women in Maghrebian society through selected works by French women writers of the contemporary literary scene. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, will introduce the female authors, the political context in which their work emerges, and the theory of masculine domination by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. We then define the testimony literature according to the theoretical work of Catherine Coquio. In the literary analytical part, the actual analysis of the literary works will take place, based on the findings of the theoretical part. We will also use media and personal interviews of the writers as sources. We will use the autobiographical stories of Saïda Menebhi, Souad Labbize and Rachida Yacoubi to define the literary techniques used by the writers to convey their traumatic life experiences to the reader. Finally, we subject all the information to comparison, thus achieving a comprehensive picture of the knowledge gained.
Geraldine Mucha. A probe into the life and work of a female composer
Vacková, Barbora ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Havelková, Hana (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerned with the life and work of a Scottish-Czech composer Geraldine Mucha (1917-2012). Based on existing sources, its aim is to critically analyse her approach towards composition and its development in the course of her life. An emphasis is placed on the analysis of various social and cultural factors which shaped both her compositional activities and the way in which she addressed them. I therefore present Mucha as a woman of specific era and culture who had to find a way to combine her musical interests with other roles she wished to, or was obliged to, fulfil. Moreover, I discuss why the chosen way had to include dissociating herself from any form of promotion of her work and composing inconspicuously in the privacy of her home. The thesis is methodologically anchored in literature discussing the specifics of writing a female biography in musicology. Using a specific example of a female composer not previously reflected in musicological literature I wish to contribute to the exploration of this topic. Key words: Geraldine Mucha, female composer, female biography, gender, Czechoslovakia, Britain

Geraldine Mucha's Music: Analysis of the Compositional Style from the Point of View of Feminist Musicology
Vacková, Barbora ; Havelková, Tereza (advisor) ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (referee)
1 Abstract This Master's thesis presents the first look into the music of Scottish-Czech composer Geraldine Mucha (1917-2012) which has never been subject to academic study before. I characterize her compositional style and musical language, as well as their development over time, by analyzing four orchestral compositions written between the 1940s and 1980s - Overture to Tempest, Piano Concerto, Suite from the ballet Macbeth and John Webster Songs. In the thesis, I am also introducing the - in Czech musicological context entirely unknown - discourse on the issue of musical analysis of pieces written by women composers and I critically explore its different strands of thought. When possible, I examine the selected pieces by using Ellie M. Hisama's theoretical model which claims that in women's music, evidence may be found that provides information about their specific female experience in the patriarchal world.
