This thesis attempts to map both personal and professional life of Vaclav Emanuel Horak, a Czech composer of the 19th century. Based on contemporary sources, especially magazines, it is clear that he was one of the most popular and most often played composers of sacred music during his lifetime. Nowadays his compositions are almost not performed. The second part of the thesis lists Horak`s compositions. This overview was created with the help of specialized databases. The final analysis of two Horak`s requiem mass settings written at two different stages of his life and comapred to the same type of composition by W. A. Mozart aims to define the compositional style of V. E. Horak and put it in context of music development at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. Subsequently, the analysis should answer the question if Horak was a composer of Classicism or of the Romantic Era. The Jesuit College in Klatovy and the adjoining St. Joseph Seminary represented an important phenomenon of the local cultural, religious and musical life of 17th and 18th centuries. By gradual building of the monastery complex Jesuits were a major influence on the town's character and their activities in the field of spiritual and cultural life did not fall behind their architectonic ones. In the town Jesuit religious fraternities were working, the town people could watch the school play performances and, last but not least, took part in numerous religious feasts organized by the order. In all these occasions especially figural music played an important role. The era of the order's activity in the town (16361773) was part of the period in which the order tolerated such music performances, however the contemporary sources show that there was strict differences were made between the repertoir played on purpose of the outer representation of the order and accompaniment of internal divine service. Basic institutional platform of the musical life was St. Joseph Seminary, operating within the college since its very foundation. The goal is to identify the three-part songs (i.e. two voices and basso continuo) and provide their practical edition (i.e. render them in the present-day form). The thesis opens with an excursion into the history of the Czech hymnbook from the 15th to the beginning of the 18th century. During this period, the Catholic Church was inspired by the repertoire of the protestant songs; we can observe that the reper- toire of all denominations was almost identical. This part is followed by an overview of the most important hymnbook of the 17th century which became Holan's source of inspiration. A separate chapter is dedi- cated to Holan's work and personal life which in itself is of great interest. The following part proceeds to the general description of Holan's hymnbook, Capella regia musicalis, and of the problems that accompanied its creation. The the- sis provides a description of the structure of the hymnbook and its formal organiza- tion. The analysis of selected details has confirmed A. Škarda's judgment that the hymnbook is ill-arranged and chaotic. The historic exposition is...
