Using subtitled videos in teaching Czech for the Czech deaf pupils

This thesis focuses on teaching Czech language to deaf Czech-signing children in the first five grades of elementary school. It analyses the use of videos with subtitles in language teaching. In the introductory chapters, the legislation regarding the education of deaf children is outlined, together with the terminology delimiting the target group for the thesis. The following part looks at the reasons why subtitles are added to audiovisual works, considering the language learning and the development of communication competence in Czech as a second/foreign language. Here, it is especially the reading competence that is stressed, and the process of reading is therefore also discussed here. Based on these, the thesis then lists the various components of an audiovisual work with subtitles and also the benefits that come from watching such a work. The condition for effective learning from the subtitles is the relevancy of the subtitles for their addressees. The subtitles have to fulfill certain requirements, both on the technical level and the appropriate language demands. Czech Signs for Selected Toponyms - Prague City's boroughs

This bachelor thesis deals with toponyms (oikonyms) in Czech sign language. The goal was to map the signs of Czech sign language for 112 Prague boroughs. The language material was collected by method of elicitation from 17 respondents. Subsequently, the signs were analyzed, described and classified in terms of the motivation given by the respondents (folk etymology). Part of the work is a CD with videos of the collected material.
The development and variation of selected prepositional phrases in contemporary Czech

This doctoral dissertation is concerned with the dynamic processes that are at play in the development of the system of prepositions in contemporary Czech. In the first part, I review different treatments of prepositions as a word class in the Czech linguistic tradition. I use available descriptive accounts to discuss the features of two main subtypes of this category, i.e. primary and secondary prepositions, focusing in particular on the process of 'prepositionalization' of secondary prepositions, i.e. the grammaticalization path that leads to their emergence. The primary focus of the first part of the dissertation is the role of meaning and the semantic features of prepositions as function words, as well as the meaning which prepositions contribute to more complex linguistic items, i.e. the interrelation of prepositions and case marking and valency patterns derived from verbs. I also draw attention to prefixed words which are, in the majority of cases, derived from primary prepositions. I approach meaning mainly from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, employing also the view of construction grammar which treats prepositions both as constructions in their own right and as parts of higher order constructions. The Dog in Linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

I. Abstract This paper is based on the theoretical principes of the Polish ethnolinguistic works introduced in the first part of this paper. We pay special attention to the theory of anthropocentrism of a natural language. The main focus of this theory is the differentiation between "one's own" and "human" on one side and "someone else's" and "non-human"on the other in a cognitive comprehension of the world. We further apply the anthropocentric approach to outline the conceptualization of domestic animals in the Czech language. The second part of the text deals with the expression pes (‚dog') in Czech and its derivatives, their position within the lexical system, their semantics, connotations and the stereotypes associated with them. The conclusion presents a cognitive definition of the concept pes (‚dog') in Czech. The definition builds upon the entry structure of the Polish Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols.
Signs for the Prague metro stations: formal and semantic motivations

(in English): The bachelor thesis 'Signs for the metro stations: formal and sematic motivations' focuses on signs for the underground stations in the czech sign language especially from creating these signs point of view. The theoretical section is about explanation of needed terms for understanding the meaning (iconicity, composition, inicialization, loan translation etc.), the practical section finds out the form of signs of all metro stations with the help of the intended interviewing deaf community. Each sign is examined by motivational aspect and formal formation. If there is a presence of multiple names for one station, the names are compared. The objective of the thesis is making the partial analysis of the sign-forming system for this defined proprietary-names section. Aquired visual material is part of the thesis as well.
Aspect in Czech sign language

This paper deals with aspect in the sign language and tries to introduce this phenomenon in connection to the Czech sign language where this issue is not yet described. Based on the knowledge of available Czech and English literature, the thesis deciphers terms that are used in relation to aspect in both, Czech and sign, languages and identifies the aspect groups that occur in sign languages. On the basis of these groups, the practical part analyzes the material of the Czech sign language in terms of aspect. The material obtained consists of speeches from deaf speakers, obtained from websites: Televizní klub neslyšících (TV show), Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce (news), Tiché zprávy (interviews) and Weblik Portal (fairy tales). The method of elicitation combined with the intuitive reflection method is used in the analysis. The work gives a first insight into the broad phenomenon of the aspect and provides a basis for more detailed future research.

Non-profit organizations in the education of pupils with a different mother tongue

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of education of pupils with a different mother tongue in the Czech Republic; the target group are children in the age of compulsory education (approx. age 6 to 15), the target location is Prague. The topic is elaborated from the perspective of the actors of language management - state institutions, elementary schools and non-profit organizations. In the theoretic part, those subjects are characterized; the focus concentrates on the current legislation, the possibilities of funding of teaching Czech as a second language, the methodical support from the state. Non-profit organizations are characterized more in detail and their general role in civil society is explained. The practical part of the thesis describes and analyses the current situation: it identifies problems each actor is dealing with and mostly it captures their positions in the system and mutual interaction. The structure of this part is based on the activities of the non-profit organizations - their offer of the extracurricular, language-education courses for pupils with a different mother tongue, support of elementary schools and people working with this target group as well as communication with the Ministry of Education and active effort to improve the current support.
