The Window of Opportunity. Cross-border environmental exchange on the South Moravian-Lower Austrian border in 1984-1995
Vnoučková, Kateřina ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Olšáková, Doubravka (referee) ; Šimková, Pavla (referee)
The dissertation deals with cross-border contacts and transfers between South Moravia and Lower Austria in the field of environment. The thesis traces this topic from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. During this time, the global de-escalation of tensions between East and West enabled the development of cross-border contacts already in the era of the closed border and subsequently after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Thus, the thesis draws on the transnational history of late socialism and the transition period and extends this research to include a regional perspective. The aim of the thesis is to show which role the environment played in cross-border contacts between the examined border regions. The thesis follows this aim in three levels of research. Firstly, it addresses the question of whether 1989 was a significant turning point in cross-border contacts, or whether there was continuity between developments in the 1980s and 1990s. Secondly, it examines the relationship between central and local developments and how they affect each other. Thirdly, the thesis focuses on cross-border transfers and the question to what extent asymmetry and different living standards discouraged or created opportunities for these transfers. The thesis answers these research questions in three thematic chapters - the...

Formation of national identity in a multinational environment: Paris immigrants in the years 1848-1900
Olšáková, Doubravka ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee) ; Galmiche, Xavier (referee)
The thesis deals with the problem of formation national identity in a multinational milieu on the case study of immigrants in Paris 1848-1900. This study is based on the analysis of archival books stored in Archives de Paris. The theories of nationalism are confronted with the quantitative analysis of data mentioned in the application forms. The analysis is made for Germany, Luxembourg, Bohemia and Hungary. The general trend tends toward the identification with State-Nation, the only exception is Bohemia. The majority of immigrants from this country professed to Austria. However, the general trend pointed out that the delay of mass anticipation was bigger than supposed by the theoretical issues. This phenomenon is due to the weak social mobilization caused by the limited capabilities and possibilities of leading local elites. The author tries to explain the Czech exception through the semiotic analysis of collective memory transformation made on the examples of notions frontier and out/and. French press and Czechoslovakia under the Normalization
Schindlerová, Klára ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Olšáková, Doubravka (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to map and to present the chosen themes of cultural and political scene of the Czechoslovakia under the normalization, as that they were presented in a given period and in a specific french journal. Among a great number of press published in France beween 1968 and 1989, I've chosen Le Monde as a significant journal. Firstly I expose the main problematics of my subject and I contextualize it in time and space. Then I propose a quantitative analysis, followed by an interpretation considering the cultural and political evolution in both countries. In order to complete the image of Czechoslovakia under the normalization made by media, I also use the press published by Czech and Slovak emigrants living in France. The image made by french television, whose importance grows continuously from 1970s, contibues as well to my problematic. I consider this thesis as a contribution to the Czech-French cultural relations in 1968-1989, a theme that has not been studied enough by historians.
Museums and Agriculture in Cold War Europe: The establishment of the Association Internationale de Musées d'Agriculture
Rocha Joaquim, João Pedro ; Janáč, Jiří (advisor) ; Olšáková, Doubravka (referee) ; Klement, Judit (referee)
Keywords: AIMA, museum history, agricultural history, International NGO history, Cold War This research focuses on the emergence and development of agricultural museum practice and theory in 20th -century Europe, with special attention to the establishment of knowledge networks between different transnational actors; contributing to the identification of theoretical change and methodological trends in the development of this museological field. The Skansen Open-Air Museum in Stockholm, a folklore museum, and the Hungarian Agricultural Museum in Budapest, a national museum with a markedly technical character, both founded in the 1890s, were the two pioneer institutions of this kind, acting as role-models for later initiatives around Europe and beyond. This bipolar ancestry reflects the variety of approaches possible, still today, in the realm of agricultural museology: one can find agriculture-related museums focused on technical matters, food and nutrition, folklore, specific industries or sectors, etc. Furthermore, the museographic approaches and curatorial options of these institutions can vary considerably from re-enactment of traditional practices to the science-centre-inspired display of environmental matters. At a time when environmental, agricultural, and food related matters gain increasing...
