In the Grip of Patriarchy: Relationship to Masculinity and Gender Mainstreaming Among Male Academics in Leadership Positions of the Czech Post-Second World War Generation
Oliva, Eva ; Nyklová, Blanka (advisor) ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (referee)
The study of masculinity and its impact on the structures and culture of the academic environment is an area that has been extensively researched internationally. Although there are significant studies that address this topic in the Czech environment, it remains under-researched in the context of specifying a group of male academics in leadership positions of the post-Second World War generation who represent very influential figures in shaping the form of Czech higher education and the culture of academic institutions. Through uncovering the contemporary, social, familial and academic influences that have been at work in shaping the gender identity of Czech academics of the post-war generation holding high positions in academic institutions, the research attempts to gain insight into how discourse and socialisation processes have influenced their perceptions of their masculine identity and performativity in personal and social spheres, including the academic one. The research attempts to capture these discursive formations that have shaped their attitudes towards gender issues, as well as the topic of gender equality in academic institutions. Male academics in leadership positions of the Czech post-Second World War generation are becoming key figures in the process of promoting gender...
Barriers in the system of assistance to partner violence survivors
Nyklová, Blanka ; Peterková, I. ; Gubová, N. ; Michálková, E. ; Piknová, T.
Qualitative research into the barriers that prevent survivors of gender-based partner violence from stopping the violence and effectively addressing its impact on themselves and their surroundings has highlighted the fragmentation of the system of assistance and its frequent de facto dysfunctionality, which appears to stem from its very set-up. The research showed the frequent downplaying and hierarchisation of violent acts and confirmed the previously stated limited capacity of the system to effectively stop violence. The research focused on people facing multiple disadvantages - its findings are consistent with international research that shows the difficulty of these groups in accessing help in this area as well.
Violence against women in the context of COVID-19
Nyklová, Blanka ; Moore, D.
Research report from research carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Sociology of the CAS, v.v.i. and Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. Exploratory qualitative research with individual components of the system of assistance and with clients of specific organisations that provide assistance to survivors of this type of violence shows the overall inconsistency in the assessment and handling of domestic violence cases in the Czech Republic.
Childfreeness as a response to the current climate crisis
Stříbrská, Šárka ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Nyklová, Blanka (referee)
This qualitative research focuses on the decision to stay childfree as a specific individual strategy for coping with the effects of climate crisis. The purpose of this study is to show ways in which the climate crisis is internalized and stressed within the decision to stay childfree. Data for this research were created through semi-structured interviews with 12 informants coming from all around the world. These informants were divided into two different categories. First of them, the kinnovators, perceive their decision to stay childfree as a way to erase the boundary between human and non-human worlds and therefore, similarly to Donna J. Haraway (2016), they perceive their childfreeness as an alternative to the popularly held belief of genalogical view on human kinship. These informants experience a great amount of environmental grief (Kevorkian, 2004) based on the values of antispeciesism and they see the main causes of climate crisis in the epoch of Anthropocene and therefore in the problems connected to human society - such as overpopulation (e.g. Ehrlich, 1986, compared to Haraway, 2016) or consumerism (Bell, 2004). Kinnovators perceive their decision to stay childfree as their individual responsibility and as a way to mitigate climate crisis, as well as a means to maintain their integrity....
Academic Identities in the Context of Mentoring Program for Early-Career Scientists
Fucimanová, Martina ; Nyklová, Blanka (advisor) ; Pavlík, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis is based on interviews with participants of the Mentoring program for early career scientists. The paper presents an analysis of the ways in which interview participants relate to what they believe is science. The aim of the analysis is to find out whether their understanding of science is gender-related and what features carry the academic identity of people actively participating in the mentoring program. The theoretical frameworks are the epistemology of science, the theory of mentoring, the scientific environment in the Czech Republic and the work of Pat O'Connor, Clare O'Hagan and Julie Brannen which deal with the research of academic identities in the current neoliberal academic environment.
Czech startups from a gender perspective
Irikovská, Alexandra ; Nyklová, Blanka (advisor) ; Pospíšilová, Marie (referee)
This thesis attempts to answer the question why there are so few female founders of startup companies in the Czech Republic. In order to identify the main roots of gender inequality in this field and obtain a detailed understanding of the gender culture of Czech startups, biographic-narrative interviews were conducted with women in managing positions as well as female founders of Czech startups. Through in-depth analysis of these women's narratives, key areas were identified which contribute to the reproduction of gender segregation in this field. The research found that the inequality is mainly caused by gender stereotypes towards women in the field of technology, which even the interviewed women reproduce through identification with a specific type of masculinity. In an attempt to fulfill the gendered expectations from an ideal startup founder or manager women often find themselves in conflict with the traditional role of women in the Czech Republic. The second group of women on the other hand emphasize the importance of femininity and indentify themselves against this type of masculinity. The analysis also showed the importance of the gender inequalities in the technical field of education, that are also reflected in the startups. The author recommends a further research into the following areas...
Česká feministická a genderová scéna: teoretické inklinace, postoje a kontroverze
Konkrétně mne zajímalo, zda rozdílné teoretické rámce mohou být příčinou ne zcela fungující spolupráce napříč scénou i v rámci jejích jednotlivých úžeji vymezených okruhů.
