Formalization of reasoning and the paradox of surprise examination

Po prezentaci možných přístupů k řešení problému v první kapitole jsem ve druhé kapitole poukázal na Sorensenovu kritiku pokusů interpretovat paradox jinak, než pomocí modálních reprezentací epistemických, či doxastických logik. Třetí kapitola byla věnována představení potřebných pojmů k pochopení Binkleyho přínosu k diskuzi paradoxu. V kapitole čtvrté jsem nakonec ukázal, že pokud se přidržíme výše zmíněného přístupu a idealizujeme si usuzovací schopnosti studenta, je analýza paradoxu, kterou provedl Binkley, korektní. Učitelovo oznámení se nám však zdá intuitivně srozumitelné a důvěryhodné, jelikož sami původně nepředjímáme studentův argument v celé komplexnosti. Pokud se s ním však již jednou ztotožníme, nezbude nám než učitelovo tvrzení odmítnout jako absurdní. Budoucnost možných příspěvků k Paradoxu překvapivé písemky pak vidím ve formalismech, které směřují k popisu explicitních znalostí.

"Is it Rational to Believe in God?". Epistemology, Metaphysics and Method in the Works of Bernard Lonergan

The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate interrelatedness between various concepts of God and metaphysical assumptions from which they have been derived. This will be done with special attention paid to philosophical work of Bernard Lonergan. On Lonergan's case I will show his solution of problematic presuppositions of scholastic understanding of God. In introduction I will summarize reasons that made me to choose this topic, goals of the thesis and methods I will use. First chapter will be dedicated to brief introduction of selected proofs of God's existence and their metaphysical premises on which they rest. Enlightenment critique of metaphysics will be described and its consequences for metaphysical proofs demonstrated. Second chapter will introduce context and goals of works of modern Canadian Jesuit theologian Bernard Joseph Francis Lonergan and his concepts of judgement and selfXaffirmation. Third chapter will be concerned with description of Lonergan's metaphysics and finally with some criticism of Lonergan's approach from perspective of postXmodern, hermeneutic, and linguistic philosophies. Logic, form and argument

The goal of this thesis is to defend and explain the claim that traditional logical analysis is not the best tool for studying natural language argumentation. The most common critique directed at employment of logical formalisms as tools for analysis of the natural language is usually based on pointing out of differences between structure and semantics of natural languages and languages of logical formalisms. This is not the main issue, I believe. According to my findings the most fundamental problem of the traditional analysis is that it is based on many problematic epistemological assumptions, which are inherited from empiricist-positivist tradition. Namely the positivist version of the classical model of rationality as deductive reasoning from some basis of immediately verifiable and therefore unquestionable knowledge. The doctrine that every reasonable argumentation is reducible on deductions of such kinds is supposed to justify the traditional analysis of argumentation. My original contribution is mainly in showing that without abandoning those presuppositions, we cannot hope to arrive at better understanding of natural language argumentation by developing new and more precise logical formalisms. Logical formalisms are mere tools, which we have to use for the right purpose in the first place....
