Reflection on the Cultural Identity of Mexico and Argentina in Selected Essays

This doctoral thesis deals with the concept of the cultural identity of Mexico and Argentina in the works of selected essayists. The cultural area of Hispanic America is often criticized for not having an original philosophy. Hispanic Americans generally avoid dogmatic statements and strictly defined concepts in their works. In their writings prevails thinking in images, which is often processed in an essay form. For this reason, essay writing represents an important source of knowledge about Hispanic American thought. The authors included in this work were selected from the twentieth century, when there is a shift in the way of thinking about one's own culture. The works of the selected writers deal with the question of cultural identity from diverse points of view, and the style of their essays also differs. The first part of the work focuses on the thinking of Ricardo Rojas (1882-1957) from Argentina and Alfonso Reyes (1889-1959) born in Mexico. Both Reyes and Rojas see the basis of national identity in the harmonious mixing of individual races and cultures throughout the history of both countries. Protagonists in selected novels by Rómulo Gallegos: Doña Bárbara and La trepadora

Title of the Bachelor's Thesis: Protagonists in selected novels by Rómulo Gallegos: Doña Bárbara and La Trepadora Abstract: The object of this thesis is to provide a complex analysis of the main characters from two novels by important Venezuelan writer Rómulo Gallegos: doňa Bárbara from the novel Doňa Bárbara and Hilariao Guanipa from La trepadora. This thesis combines work of other authors into a new theoretical scheme of character analysis, including mimetic and semiotic approach and it studies their placement in the structure of the novel. After a short presentation of those novels the scheme of character analysis is applied on each character. It studies its characterization in text, its existence in story, the relation to other components of the novel, its function in "siujet" and classifies the character by diferent tipologies. The Absurdity and Silvestre Paradox

The main objective of the thesis is to observe the absurd situations and characters in the works of Pío Baroja Adventures, inventions and mystifications of Sylvester Paradox (Aventuras, inventos y mixtificaciones de Silvestre Paradox) and Paradox king (Paradox, rey). The presence of absurdity serves primarily to express sharp criticism directed against the bohemian society in Madrid at the beginning of the twentieth century, in terms of the first novel, and against European imperialist policy, in the second novel. The work also seeks to briefly clarify the historical and literary context in which both works were created and express the connection between the form of the novels and the crisis that occurred at the turn of the century.

Reflection of the Indigenous World in the 20th Century Latin American Essay PhDr. Lucie Núñez Tayupanta Abstract This dissertation focuses on the study of essayistic works which reflect the presence of indigenous world and its cultural traditions in Latin America. The aim of this work is to answer the question of how Latin-American essayists consider the contribution of the indigenous heritage to the creation of national identity. Furthermore, the work aims to point out the differences in approach of the essayists and to emphasize specific elements of this process in their works. At the beginning, the thesis deals with the theoretical definition of the genre of essay which is primarily based on studies of Spanish and Latin-American critics. The main part is devoted to the analysis of six essayistic works where three different approaches to the relationship between cultures are evident. The harmonic conception is present in the work of the Mexican writer Alfonso Reyes. Reyes finds common features between the original (pre- Columbian) and the contemporary culture and observes a blending of these two units. In the case of Reyes' text, we can see an effort to find a harmony in the fusion of cultures, the European and indigenous tradition. Female characters in indigenist novels and their representation in contrast with male characters

The work focuses on the study of female characters of the indigenist Hispano-American novels. It concentrates on the way how women are depicted in these works of art, and at the same time, it compares them to male characters. It aims to answer the question, if it is possible to talk about a certain type of female characters, that is repeated in these literary works. Among other things, it also pursues the role played by female characters in the researched novels, studies what they represent and to which extent they influence the plot. .
The character of a dictator in the novels of "El señor presidente" by M. Á. Asturias and The Feast of the Goat by M. Vargas Llosa

(in English): This Bachelor's Thesis examines the novels that have the figure of a dictator as their theme, which is typical for Hispano American literature. It focuses on the character of a dictator in the two novels of Hispano American literature: the dictator Rafael Trujillo in "The Feast of Goat", written by Mario Vargas Llosa and the character of Manuel Estrada Cabrera in "El Señor Presidente", written by Miguel Ángel Asturias. In the theoretical part, the thesis is concerned with the term "dictatorship" and with anti-democratic regimes as such. Furthermore, the circumstances of Latin America regarding the dictatorship are described; and, above all, the thesis examines the tradition of the novels with the figure of a dictator as their theme, their discovery and typology. The following part is more practical and concentrates on the actual novels, in which it examines, apart from the circumstances surrounding the writing of the novels and the historical context, also the literary description of a dictator and of his regime, the depiction of the atmosphere and also the stylistic devices used for the authentic descriptions of the rulers. The final chapter compares the both dictators.
