Sleep in the Context of Quality of LIfe
Prokeš, Michaela ; Hamplová, Dana (advisor) ; Kreidl, Martin (referee) ; Manková, Denisa (referee)
The central focus of my dissertation thesis is sleep in the context of quality of life. The significance and value of a good night's sleep to our well-being is often underestimated. Although partially determined by genetics, sleep is also strongly determined by environmental and social factors. Much of the research in this area, however, limits itself to studies with biomedical approaches, and the sociological aspects of sleep are rarely investigated. The dissertation aims to bridge this knowledge gap, discussing sleep in the context of quality of life and applying a variety of analytical methods on data collected from a Czech population sample to study how sleep affects and is affected by quality of life. Motivated by a lack of research on the longitudinal effects of sleep and well-being, the dissertation includes a research article (Chapter 3) on the long-term effects of changes in sleep duration, sleep quality and social jetlag (the discrepancy between biological time and social times) on quality of life (satisfaction with life, happiness, work stress, subjective health and well-being). A second article investigates social jetlag and its links to work and family (Chapter 4). A third article studies sleep in the context of family types and the effect of parenthood on sleep duration and social...
Změny kulturní krajiny a jejich vliv na biodiverzitu
Mánková, Denisa
The diploma thesis is focused on changes in the cultural landscape and their impact on biodiversity. The work is divided into several parts. The literature review includes an overview of available information on topics related to the landscape, biodiversity, wild beasts, biogeography and characterization of the locality of the municipality of Moravany from the point of view of biogeography. The methods used are listed in the methodology chapter, namely: calculation of ecological stability, SWOT analysis, comparative method and phytocenological survey. The results of the work present the values of the ecological stability of the selected area, as well as the evaluation of the SWOT analysis, phytocenological images, the evaluation of the comparative method, the evaluation of the survey among the inhabitants of the given village and the evaluation of the statistical records of game. The results show that changes to the cultural landscape in the selected region based on data from 2010 to 2020 had a negative impact, which is visible in the reduced reading of game from statistical data.
Circadian rhythms in human life - elaboration of the topic with elements of the flipped classroom teaching method
Křivohlavá, Tereza ; Mourek, Jan (advisor) ; Manková, Denisa (referee)
The thesis deals with an alternative teaching method called the flipped classroom, which was applied in the practical part to the topic of the biology of circadian rhythms. In the flipped classroom method, the phases of teaching are switched. Study material is created for the students and presented to them for home study before the class. In the actual teaching, there is then more time for clarifying ambiguities or consolidating material, which is the main advantage of the flipped classroom. Circadian rhythms are biorhythms repeating with a period of approximately 24 hours. The circadian system is controlled by the central circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus. These circadian clocks are synchronized by environmental stimuli, predominantly light. In the case of irregular artificial lighting, the body's circadian clock desynchronizes and disturbances in mood, cognitive performance, or physical health can occur. In the frame of the practical part of the thesis, a video was created to introduce students to the topic of circadian rhythms. In addition, worksheet assignments were created to practice and deepen students' knowledge of biological rhythms, as well as the design of an entire teaching unit with flipped classroom elements. Everything was tested on 4 groups of the...
The Bedtime Procrastination Phenomenon of Czech Adolescents
Smolová, Kateřina ; Manková, Denisa (advisor) ; Čípková, Pavla (referee)
Bedtime procrastination is a recently researched phenomenon that in adolescence contributes to poor sleep quality and duration. Sleep procrastination has most often been researched in relation to self-regulation, self-efficacy, and general procrastination. More recently, studies have emerged that focus more on health characteristics in relation to this phenomenon. The aim of the current study was to research the relationship between bedtime procrastination in a Czech adolescent population and sleep quality, sleep duration, chronotype, social jet-lag, gender, and place of residence (city/village). Another aim was to discover the contents and reasons leading individuals to sleep procrastination. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire completed by N = 396 respondents aged 15-18 years. Pearson correlations showed a strong positive relationship (r = .56, p < .001) between sleep procrastination rate and sleep quality, as well as negative relationship with sleep duration (r = -.41, p < .001), strong negative relationship with chronotype (r = -.56, p < .001), and a weak positive relationship with social jet-lag (r = .27, p < .001). Results indicate that the more adolescents procrastinate, the worse sleep quality, shorter sleep duration, higher levels of social jet-lag and evening chronotype,...
Nightmares in university students and their connection with creativity and quality of sleep
Matějková, Eliška ; Manková, Denisa (advisor) ; Kuchař, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with nightmares and their connection to creativity and quality of sleep. Current findings about nightmares, quality of sleep in university students, creativity, and the connection between nightmares and sleep quality and between nightmares and creativity are summarized here. This pilot study yielded data on the prevalence of nightmares and quality of sleep in a population of university students. The prevalence of frequent nightmares (at least one nightmare a week) was 27,9 %, and the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 88,4 %. Furthermore, the relationships between nightmares and sleep quality and nightmares and creativity were examined. Nightmare frequency was positively correlated with sleep quality. No correlation was found between nightmare frequency and domain-specific creativity and nightmare distress and domain-specific creativity. Considering the high prevalence of frequent nightmares and poor sleep quality and the positive correlation found between nightmare frequency and sleep quality, I believe it would be appropriate to pursue this topic further. Although no correlation was found in this study between nightmare frequency and creativity, foreign research indicates some evidence for this relationship. Further research could work with a sample of participants...
The Influence of Chronotype on Study Results of Pupils
Kasalová, Michaela ; Manková, Denisa (advisor) ; Kuba, Radim (referee)
The individual setup of circadian rhythm is known as a chronotype, circadian preference, or morning and evening orientation. The beginning of lessons for pupils is situated in the morning hours which is not necessarily compatible with their chronotype. The achievement of testing pupils and learning opportunities is influenced by their daily preference. The aim of this study was to describe a chronotype of pupils in the 5th grade of a primary school and its influence on achievement. We determined a chronotype of children by the questionnaire CCTQ and then, children were tested for their knowledge alternately early in the morning (7:30-9:30) and later in the morning (10:00-12:00). The research was conducted at selected primary schools in Prague and in the Vysocina Region. In total the sample included 175 pupils, 11 % are morning, 57 % intermediate and 32 % evening types. In the Vysocina Region, pupils tend to have a morning preference rather than pupils in Prague. The gender-dependent chronotype was not detected. The correlation between the chronotype and the average school marks in Czech language and Mathematics was not significant. Despite the insignificant results of statistical tests, the positive connection between the chronotype and the time of testing pupils' knowledge can be read from the...
