The Stoic paradox: freedom of determined action
Mikeš, Vladimír ; Karfík, Filip (advisor) ; Sedley, David (referee) ; Gourinat, Jean Baptiste (referee)
The work deals with the problem of freedom in the theory of the early Stoics (3. c. BC) which has been a controversial issue since antiquity up to this very day. In its three parts the author examines basic aspects of this problem in order to offer his own interpretation. The first part tackles the question of action and responsibility being thus an introduction to the whole problem which in this light reveals its paradoxical form: on the one hand, the Stoics teach "fatal" determination of all motion, on the other, they defend human responsibility pointing at the specific faculty of human soul - the assent. In the second part, the author offers an analysis of the Stoic notion of reason in the full scope of its different characterizations as collection of concepts, as inner language and as specific structure of the motion of human soul. On the basis of an attempt to bring these definition together as complementary perspectives, the interpretation of the Stoic assent is proposed showing that it is to be understood as reflective turn of the reason towards itself. This claim aims also at solving the paradox of the assent - determined and autonomous in the same time: the assent is autonomous only insofar as it represents reason giving approval to its own interpretation of the world; it is however not autonomous...
Dario Fo´s Handbook in The Context of Drama Teaching
Berčíková, Anežka ; SIEGLOVÁ, Tereza (advisor) ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis aims to familiarize the readers with the book by Dario Fo, an Italian playwright, called Manuale Minimo dell´attore (The Tricks of the Trade), published in 1987. My original motivation to write this thesis was the fact that this book had not been translated to Czech. The book deals with the life and acting and teaching experience of Dario Fo himself, Dario Fo is also the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature (1997). Furthermore, this thesis summarizes the formal structure of the Drama Handbook. Moreover, I cover various topics described in the Drama Handbook and I go on to compare them with the opinions of other playwrights. Those topics include improvisation, the conflict of content and form, inspiration by the Far East or work with the masque. The main benefit of this thesis is that the reader is familiarized with the book that had never been translated to Czech and thereby gets a chance to understand not only the approach of Dario Fo but also of authors with conflicting views.
Unconscious Inspiration
Holubář, Patrik ; MAKONJ, Karel (advisor) ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (referee)
The meaning of this work is the explanation of a particular life expression, which is presented by moment of now, that inside itself encapsulates cause and consequence. The focus of this work is to define the influences which have effects during artistic creation which is a compilation of physiologic and psychological phenomenons of a particular person. For this purpose I reflected on my activity to date as an artist, secondly I looked up and read relevant literature and met with people, who willingly helped me with this work. The finding of my continuous and retrospective cognition is that artistic creation is closely related to life experiences, individual perception and subjective benefits and experiences. Therefore, a person can set out his lifelong goal of whom he wants to be and what he would like to achieve. He would know almost automatically, what he should do in accordance with his deep-rooted and previously tested abilities and thus he would behave as such at a present moment. It is desirable to pursue one´s chosen vocational skills, preferably most of one´s free time to ensure one´s professional growth in a particular field. However, it is necessary to pay attention to one´s personal life, which can have the deciding impact on the final consequence.
Marcus Aurelius and The Meditations
Wolf, Edita ; Thein, Karel (advisor) ; Mikeš, Vladimír (referee)
The classification of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius as a spiritual exercise by Pierre Hadot has been widely accepted and exerts a strong influence on any interpretation of the text. However, such genre categorization is by itself an interpretative choice excluding other possible readings. The present thesis offers a new reading of the Meditations based on Gilles Deleuze's interpretation of stoicism and on his philosophy of event. This reading avoids any genre classification and focuses instead on the text itself by analyzing the changes of linguistic person. The Deleuzian interpretation of linguistic person and his concept of event allow for explanation of this particular feature of the Meditations and thus for addressing the problem of person and individual in stoic philosophy. Furthermore, the Deleuzian framework makes it possible to explore significant, but up to now marginalized themes recurring in the text that are directly linked to the problem of individuation - non-tragic theatre and death.

THE SHIFTING OF PERSONAL LIMITS
Schmidtmajerová, Johana ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (advisor) ; TRPIŠOVSKÝ, Lukáš (referee)
In this master thesis, creative process and the process of personal growth and their fusion are dealt with. The thesis is opened with associations and continued with thematic exploration up to reflections upon specific encounters and cooperation on theatre performances and other project that I have participated in as an actress. Through the unanswered questions posed in this thesis I constantly remind myself of the fact that acting is a process of constant searching, which, however, does not need to resemble blind stumbling through the unknown and in fact, in my opinion, it should not. In my work, I try to articulate what I have been able to uncover about myself and the creative process as an actress and so develop systematically in my profession, both through work on myself and within a group. I consider feedback to be a necessary step towards professionalism and an important contribution for shifting personal limits. This thesis is concluded with a reflection of my internship at the Portuguese Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa ? Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema.
THE PHYSICAL ACTOR
Menšík, Marek ; TEJNOROVÁ, Petra (advisor) ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (referee)
The actor is flesh and bones. The actor uses the body throughout his career. He needs it for communicating. To be able to play. In this thesis the author returns to his professional experiences which led him to deeper understand a physicality of an actor and to think about a possibility of physical expression and being on stage. This knowledge the author demonstrates on Erasmus Internship in Barcelona, on completed shows and workshops and private work outside the theatre. He contemplates not only how the body can talk to the audience, but also how an actor should approach his body and how he should take care about it.
ME ACTOR, ME HUMAN
Josephová, Anne-Françoise ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (advisor) ; MAKONJ, Karel (referee)
This thesis explores the parallels of actor´s training in everyday life. The first part works with individual domains on a general level (perceptivness, breath, voice, movement), the second part is focused more specifically on the field of theatre improvisation. The work names the prerequisites of an open-minded approach towards creation, that help a living and fulfilling process come alive. Based on the idea, that our common life is a result of creation just like a work of art, the work reflects these prerequisites and their impact on the field of everyday actions and on the attitude to life in general.

Theatre as a Tool
Večeríková, Mariana ; MIKEŠ, Vladimír (advisor) ; KLÍMA, Miloslav (referee)
The aim of the dissertation work Theatre as a tool is to research how active theatre work influences personal development of actors and non-actors. This problem is analysed mainly through my experiences gained at Summer Theatre workshop for children which I have been leading for three years and my one year experience at Norwegian Theatre company Stella Polaris. I also mention the experiences from my studies at Academy of Performing Arts. In this dissertation work I am trying to find out in which specific fields can theatre work influence one´s personality. I am closely looking at comparison between my personal approach for Summer workshops and Stella Polaris´s approach in fields of intellectual and physical approach towards a non-actor, fields of trust and collaboration. I am also writing about my personal development. All my opinions are supported by particular experiences from both projects.
