Kéryová, Barbora ; Kanasugi, Petra (advisor) ; Labus, David (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the theme of nature as used in Japanese political discourse. The goal of this paper is to highlight the use of language by Japanese political elite of the governing Liberal-democratic party with the purpose of creating a certain image of the relationship between Japanese people and nature. The objective is to identify and describe the language means of realisation that have a potential to fulfil this role in the analysed texts. The paper analyses three particular texts using a methodology of critical discourse analysis. It especially draws upon methodology of Ruth Wodak, who created categories of strategies used by political elites for national identity (trans)formation. Tenzan jutsu: Revolution in Traditional Japanese Mathematics
Vitvar, Tomáš ; Labus, David (advisor) ; Sýkora, Jan (referee)
Proposed paper is a study of historical development of wasan, i.e., traditional Japanese mathematics. I chiefly focus on the origin of tenzan jutsu, a calcula- tion method, that by its inner logic and by usage of a symbolic notation greatly resembles Western algebra. As there is no satisfying evaluation of a level of similarity of those two traditions in an existing literature, I decided to closely examine tenzan jutsu using a theory of potentialities of language of mathemat- ics proposed by Ladislav Kvasz. Comparing my examination and analysis of Western algebra done by L. Kvasz, I came to a conclusion, that although the language of tenzan jutsu is in most aspects almost identical to the language of Western algebra, there is a major difference in a way those languages developed. While the development of the Western algebra was hindered by a cultural need to interpret exponents in a geometrical context and by a strong reluctance to accept negative terms as a part of equation, the development of Japanese math- ematics, which was free of such restrictions, was considerably more dynamic. Keywords tenzan jutsu, wasan, Tokugawa, Edo, Seki Takakazu, Seki Kowa, algebra, math- ematics, tengen jutsu, Ladislav Kvasz, language of mathematics

The evolution of the Japanese public's view on the territorial dispute over Tsushima in the 21st century
Tureková, Veronika ; Sýkora, Jan (advisor) ; Labus, David (referee)
This master thesis deals with the perception of territorial dispute concerning Tsushima and Korean claims to this Japanese island. The impact of these claims is quite noticeable in the perception of Japanese society, as it is one of the current disputes between Japan and the Republic of Korea, and even in the 21st century provokes significant reactions among the residents of both countries. Reactions to this topic can be seen on the online forum Yahoo! Japan, where since the beginning of the year 2000 has been a visible increase of posts regarding the issue of Tsushima. For this reason, the platform was chosen as the subject of a study on the independent understanding of territorial claims to Tsushima in the public sphere of Japan. Using the published posts of this Internet community, the thesis deals with the way in which the perceptions of Korean claims to Tsushima developed during the years 2000 to 2021. The analysis uses the principles of resolving territorial disputes according to the theory of B. T. Sumner, who states the decisive factors for the assessment of territorial disputes in front of International Court of Justice. The thesis compares these legal factors with the circumstances as perceived by the online community of Yahoo! Japan, and at the same time focuses on the public factors...

The role of art and culture in the revitalisation of shrinking regions in Japan
de Grootová, Žofia ; Sýkora, Jan (advisor) ; Labus, David (referee)
This thesis is concerned with the question how art and culture can be used in the process of regional revitalization, and how this potential is being realized in Japan. The way that regional revitalization is currently understood in Japan promotes bottom-up approach, utilizing of local knowledge, and community participation. In the first part of the thesis, I analyze this regional development approach using the theories of neo-endogenous development. In the following chapters I analyze how arts and culture are used in various strategies of neo-endogenous development, namely in promotion of cultural tourism, place branding, and support of local participation, while applying the theoretical knowledge to examples in Japan. Since regional revitalization is not a straight-forward process, I also give attention to the many challenges of this approach. In the last chapter, I use a case study of a region in Niigata prefecture to illustrate one of the ways, in which arts and culture can play a vital role in revitalization of a region. Keywords: Japan, regional revitalization, regional development, shrinking regions, neo-endogenous regional development, art and culture
Fukeshu and komuso monks
