Poláček, Lumír ; Kouřil, Pavel
This volume is a collection of 25 conference papers dealing with the arms and equestrian equipment in the East and Central Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries. It brings a wide variety of issues, from typology and chronology through manufacturing technology and a practical application of artefacts to the general questions of medieval warfare. It presents finds both from the settlement and grave contexts. The predominant archaeological perspective is completed by historical and other studies, including a scientific experiment.
The Chronology of luxurious women's jewellery in the Early Medieval period and its historical significance
Chorvátová, Hana ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Profantová, Naděžda (referee) ; Kouřil, Pavel (referee)
The Chronology of the luxurious women's jewellery in the Early Mediaeval period and its historical significance. This PhD thesis deals with the dating of women's luxurious jewellery in the area of South Moravia in Early Mediaeval period. The aim of the thesis is ordering of women's jewellery sets into relative chronological sequence. The impetus for the analysis of jewellery was the recognition of some discrepancies in the relative chronology of the cemetery at Staré Město "Na valách", which was the basis of relative chronology of 9th century material culture in previous decades. After the division of women's jewellery assemblages into three relative-chronological phases, the author tries to define these phases in the terms of absolute chronology. New insights into the dating of the woman jewellery open the question of its origin and new views on its historical interpretation and significance. Keywords: Women's jewellery, earrings, "gombíky" (spherical pendants), classification, relative and absolute chronology, Early Mediaeval period, burial place, Christianization, Early Mediaeval elite

Study of skeletal residues degradation using infrared spektroskoscopy
Vitešníková, A ; Prokeš, L. ; Nývltová Fišáková, Miriam ; Drozdová, E. ; Kouřil, Pavel ; Stabrava, Pavel ; Gryc, Jana
Infrared spectroscopy is one of the most frequent method used for identi'cation of various materials. Method was used in this study for characterisation of postmortal degradation of skeletal residues. An Essentials importance for preservation or degradation of bone tissue have the qualities of surrounding soil – mainly pH level and humidity. In acidic surroundings the mineral composition of bone – hydroxyapatite Ca5(PO4)3OH is gradually melt, which can 'nally eventuate in decalci'cation of bone tissue. Another result of the acidic environment is recrystalization of hydroxyapatite into the other mineral called bruslit (CaHPO4 . 2 H2O). Brushit occurence was approved in bones of Dietrichstein family members, who were buried in a family crypt in Mikulov. A speci'c factor in.uencing degradation of bones is high temperature. FTIR spectroscopy can be used to dif- ferentiate between burnt or unburnt bones and thanks to this method the temperature of cremation and the burning conditions can be successfully estimated. Bone residues coming from the necropolis in Přibor (the Bronz Age, the Iron Age) and also animal residues from Chotěbuz-Podo- bora were analysed.
Minor medieval fortifications in Skorošice, near Javorník
Kouřil, Pavel ; Prix, Dalibor
In this contribution, the authors asses what little remains of minor medieval fortifications (motts) in the cadastre of the village of Skorošice in Czech Silesia. There are no written records of the two fortifications, only sparse archaeological finds. These enable the dating of the constructions to the 14th century; they did not last long and probably did not survive the Hussite military campaign in Silesia in 1428 (?).
