Economic Policy in Electoral Platforms of the Czech Political Parties in 2017
Vaněk, Karel ; Gregor, Martin (advisor) ; Kotrč, Michal (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to examine eligibility of the predictions of coalitions in the Chamber of Deputies in Czech Republic based on the economic electoral platforms. A data set for the years 2013 and 2017 is used based on the questions and answers from voting advice application www.volebnikalkulacka.cz. Using principal component analysis a 2-D political space is defined and for each of the two election years four methods of coalition prediction are used and compared. The results show that indeed coalitions are partly made based on the economics platforms with other condition being also relevant. Do less developed regions vote populistic parties? The case of Slovakia
Dusková, Natália ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Kotrč, Michal (referee)
Populism has been a widespread issue since the 20th century. Scientific work that has dealt with this political approach in the past is concentrated mainly on influential countries, whereas smaller countries do not receive much atten- tion. Therefore, we investigate the two Slovak latest parliamentary elections taking place in 2016 and 2020 using the data on the county level. As far as one of the Slovak problems are regional disparities, this paper aims to find the key characteristics of the counties that influence the support of populist parties voting. In the first place, we introduce the OLS estimation with the heteroskedasticity standard errors, given that heteroskedasticity is detected in most of our models by the Breusch-Pagan test. We find out a positive effect of unemployment and religious people on voting for populist parties. On the contrary, skilled workers and Hungarians minorities are opposed to voting for such parties. Furthermore, we merge the dataset to create two-period panel data and apply pooled analysis and first-differencing to examine the changes overthe years. However, wedonotrevealanysignificant changes between2016 and 2020. The Impact of Structural Funds and Cohesion Fund on Convergence: The Case of Slovak Districts
Kotrč, Michal ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
Do Structural Funds and Cohesion Fund contribute to the improvement of economic performance across Slovak districts? In order to answer the question this thesis explores the impact of EU funds invested within specific operational programmes over the programming periods 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 on the decrease in unemployment rate and on the increase in real wage and employment rate. Besides the standard panel data regression technique we also apply a spatial autoregressive model due to the presence of spillover effects between regions. This thesis thus goes beyond the existing literature on the evaluation of the impact of EU funds in Slovakia as it incorporates spatial effects in the analysis. In comparison with the results of the baseline fixed effects model, the estimated impact of EU funds in the spatial autoregressive model is smaller and in certain cases even negative. Hence the results raise doubts about the efficiency of EU funds. Furthermore, after including the spatial effects we find that the existence and significance of the economic convergence across Slovakia depends not only on the chosen economic indicator but also on the specification of regional units.
The Rise of Extreme Right: Evidence from the Slovak Parliamentary Election
Kotrč, Michal ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Čechová, Kristýna (referee)
What explains the late election success of extreme right in Slovakia? Al- though there are many studies on Western European extreme right parties, less attention is devoted to their Central European cousins. From a meth- odological perspective, even fewer studies consider spatial effects in their models. This thesis aims to explain electoral support for the extreme right Kotleba - People's Party Our Slovakia political party (Kotleba-L'SNS) in the 2016 parliamentary election using a broad range of socio-demographic, economic and cultural variables on the municipal level. In the first stage, we use ordinary least squares regression as our baseline model. As this model suffers from spatial error correlation, we use a spatial error model in the second stage. We managed to create a variable which removed Roma people from the group of unemployed and thus we disentangled the effect of Roma people and unemployment on the electoral support for the Kotleba-L'SNS party. In this way, we found a significant positive effect of share of un- employed people on the electoral support for the extreme right-wing party. Other estimates indicate a significant positive effect of share of the young people and share of people with a lower level of education on support for the Kotleba - People's Party Our Slovakia. On the contrary,...
