Košařová, Markéta ; Klír, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
This master thesis is a contribution to the knowledge concerning settlement structures and appearances of villages in the eastern hinterland of medieval Prague. The work focuses on the microregion situated in the basin of the Rokytka stream. Based on archaeological and written sources, contemporary settlement network is reconstructed, inclusive of its transformations taking place between the 12th and 16th centuries. The core section of the thesis includes processes and interpretation of the results revealed during the rescue archaeological excavation in the territory of the deserted medieval village Babice. Considering the microregion within its wider context of Prague hinterland allows evaluating its economic potential and its relation to the High Middle Ages city.
Nondestructive research on the medieval settlement areas in the Mrlina river basin in Central Bohemia
Janovská, Viktorie ; Klír, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
This master's thesis summarizes the results of analytical surface collections and large-scale geophysical survey of early medieval settlement Havraň, cadastral municipality Vestec nad Mrlinou, district Nymburk. The Mrlina river basin was chosen as a model region, as it is an area of continuous archaeological interest with a complete record of High Middle Ages settlement. Havraň seems to be a site with the greatest study potential, the site is also a historically significant place. According to written sources, the settlement Havraň was an administrative centre of a lower order in the Early Middle Ages. There was a motte and bailey with a farmyard and several homesteads in the High Middle Ages. The site was newly researched using analytical surface collections and large-scale geophysical surveys. The aim of non-destructive archaeological research was primarily to understand the form and disposition of early medieval settlement and its changes in the High Middle Ages. A substantial part of the work is the analysis of the ceramic assemblage from the surface collections, evaluation the data in GIS, and correlation with the results of the geophysical survey. During the interpretation of the results, the graduate focused mainly on the basic idea of (1) the chronology of settlement, (2) the spatial extent...

The beginnings of the west-Slavic strongholds
Lohnická, Jana ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Klír, Tomáš (referee)
Bachelor thesis deals with the beginnings of the west-slavic strongholds. These objects had a significant position in settlement structure during the early middle ages. Interpretation requires an accurate dating. To describe the beginnings of hillforts is much more complicated because the archaeological artefacts, especially early medieval pottery as predominant find, are not easy to date. Direct dating is now available in some cases thanks to dendrochronology. According to this new method we know, that building of ramparts began later than we supposed. On the other side the documentary records know rampart in the seventh century. Though in the archaeological evidence it seems, that hillforts were not represented in the Slavic settlement since early. The context for such fortification must lie outside a supposed Slavic immigration. The aim of this work is to find out cause, which lead to building ramparts and determine functions, which hillforts fulfilled. Learning about their development in particular regions will lead to better understanding this phenomenon.
Background of Medieval House. Archaeological Excavation in Hradec Králové, Malé náměstí, čp. 116-118.
Záveská, Daniela ; Klápště, Jan (advisor) ; Klír, Tomáš (referee)
This paper deals with the material from the fecal cesspit, that was revealed in 1999 during the salvage excavations of the backyards of the houses number 116 - 118 on the Malé náměstí in Hradec Králové. The most common artefacts were kitchen and table pottery, tiles and in a small scale also glass and metal items. Beside these fragments of timber, which originally strengthened the walls of the cesspit, bones of domestic animals and plant macro remains, which giving us the information about the diet of the inhabitants of each house, have been found. The paper is accompanied by a catalogue of finds and the pictorial documentation. The processing of artefacts gave us a lot of information about the material culture and life in this part of medieval Hradec Králové. For more accurate image of the medieval situation the processing of all the material from the excavation is needed.

Vnoučková, Darina ; Klápště, Jan (advisor) ; Klír, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of the presented thesis is to cover the topic of one of the first archaeological research explorations of the originally middle-age fortified manor in Martinice u Votic, Czechoslovakia, done in years 1951 and 1954 and led by an archaeologist Květa Reichertová, an employee of the former State Institute of Archaeology in Prague. The knowledge obtained during this research became a regular part of our archaeological literature. The author of the thesis provides a detailed reconstruction of the research, essential for the interpretation of the findings and the construction development of the stronghold. She also tries to explain the strongholdin Martinice u Votic in the broader context of all the retrievable writtensources that mentionthe strongholdor its owner and presents a broad and by far not yet exhausted collection - mainly ceramic tableware, embossed tiles, and metallic objects - which are indicative of the state of the stronghold as well as of the lifestyle, social class and views of the owners. The author concentrates mainly on the iconographically rich set of embossed tiles from the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. PhDr. Zdeněk Beneš, CSc. Abstract: The dissertation thesis intends to affect changes within the studies of medieval settlement in context with Czech historiography. It focuses on the relationship between the character of historiographical discourse and applied methods of research. The subject of relational analysis is both linguistic branches of Bohemian historiography. Changes in the specific field discourse are observed against the background of changes in Bohemian historical culture. Thus, the ways of multiplication of historical knowledge and the connection to the socio-political, cultural and institutional context of the observed issues are also monitored. The work mainly takes into account the territory of the wider historical Cheb region, which is used as a model example of changes in historical questioning depending on changes in historical awareness and social context of the time. Klír, Tomáš ; Klápště, Jan (advisor) ; Smetánka, Zdeněk (referee)
This doctoral thesis presents the study of the rural milieu in the Later Middle Ages and the Early New Ages, especially with regard to its economic and settlement aspects. As a useful source of specific information we chose enclaves of margins since they are connected with contrasting settlement situation. This contrast served us well as a starting point for a discussion of more general features. The dissertation is divided into four parts. The first part deals with general problems of intensive agricultural exploitation of margins. In the second part, we bring forward a concrete example and discuss agricultural systems, which were employed on the enclave from the Early New Ages, namely, on the aeolian sands near Sadská (Central Bohemia). The third part is devoted to the beginnings of the medieval settlements in this particular region. This part of our research we based on written sources. The subject of the fourth part is the analysis of all relief remains represented by the deserted medieval village Kří (near Sadská) situated on the aeolian sands. It was this deserted village, together with the interest in relief remains of medieval settlements hitherto preserved in the landscape, that gave incentive to write this dissertation. The broader temporal range of the topic was determined by two facts. Firstly,...
