A contrastive approach to grammar teaching as the main component of Czech textbooks for Russian speakers

Diploma thesis A Contrastive Approach to Grammar Teaching as the Main Component of Czech Textbooks for Russian Speakers is focused on issues of creating texbooks for this target group. The work researches into a situation on the Czech texbook market, then analizes available publications of Czech for Russian speakers and dwells over creating Czech texbooks for foreigners. The main attention is concentrated on application of a contrastive approach in Czech grammar teaching. The author is also inquire into related topics, which are theoretical and practical issues of second Slavonic language teaching, interference as a main didactic problem. She presents a comparative review of Czech and Russian and investigates with possibilities of contrastive approach in processing grammar part of a texbook on the basis of the available publications for East Slavonic students.

The bachelor thesis pays attention to the theme of The Locative Singular Mascular and Neuter Based on the Corpus Material (the distribution, interchangeableness and frequency of the endings -u nad -e). The work is focused on the polymofphism of the declination paradigmas hrad and město in the singular form, specially on the competition between the endings -u and -elě. The bachelor thesis compares the approach to that problem in classic and modem czech grammars: Nauka o českém jazyku, Stručná mluvnice česká, Mluvnice češtiny (2), Příruční mluvnice češtiny, Mluvnice současné češtiny. Apart from the main ending introduction grammars orientate on the factors, which may affect the future ending selection. A frequant faktor is the case correspondence between genitiv and lokativ, specially in the Alois Jedličkas language guide O češtině pro Čechy. Příruční mluvnice česká describes syntactic function as one more faktor. Mluvnice češtiny (2) shows on the regional disparity. Spoken Czech in Moravia

My Bachelor thesis aims to clearly describe situation in Moravia and show the stratification of the Czech and Russian languages and a city language in the two Russian "capitals", Moscow and Saint Petersburg. I drew on specialized works dedicated to this topic, small studies in various scientific proceedings, newspaper articles and my own materials. The thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, I deal with the stratification of the Czech national languages, aspects of diversification of the Czech national language, particularly with respect to the role of standard and informal Czech. In the second chapter, I describe situation in Moravia and Moravian dialects. Despite their differences from standard and informal Czech, dialects are still Czech; they are just a phonetic variant of Czech. The third chapter contains an elaboration on the city language in Ostrava, and particularly in Brno. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the stratification of the Russian language, Russian dialects and contains a brief comparison of the "city language" in Russia. For my research, I used the questionnaire method and compared languages spoken in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Language analysis of TV programmes 168 hodin and Střepiny

This bachelor thesis contains comparison of publicistic programmes, "168 hodin" and "Střepiny". It analyses the language arrangement and the language choice in two similar programmes of two rival TV companies, a public and a private one. The thesis show how the Czech vocabulary is used in both broadcasts and what various language tools are used by the editors to attract a spectator.
The Czech verb and teaching Vietnamese students of Czech

My BA thesis is focused on the Czech and Vietnamese verb because verb is the basis of a Czech sentence. It is divided into three chapters. In the first two chapters of my work I used information gained from the sources listed in the bibliography. I compared the two languages with respect to typology. I discussed the differences between flexional and isolating languages. The third chapter is focused on a method of presenting the Czech verb to Vietnamese learners of Czech.
Some problems in pronunciation when studying Czech as a second language: based on Russian speaking students

This diploma thesis describes the most frequent difficulties which Russian speaking students face while acquiring phonetic features of Czech. It also focuses on discovering the causes leading to fixation of foreign accent. We are trying to organize, on the basis of theoretical comparison of phonological systems of Czech and Russian, phonetic mistakes which Russian speaking students make. Subsequently it analyses phonetic features described in Czech for foreigners textbooks. It emphasises systematic identification of mistakes appearing in the speech of students studying Czech coming from Russian speaking environment, perceived by: (1) students themselves, (2) their teachers and (3) native speakers. This analysis contributes to better understanding of, how students master closely related foreign language, what difficulties they encounder in education and how the students can cope with those problems.
Acquisition of Czech by French learners: automatic analysis of errors in declension

Our work presents the realization of a platform of computer-assisted language learning CETLEF, featuring on-line fill-in-the-blank exercises with automatic feedback on errors. CETLEF, consisting of a relational data base and author and learner interfaces, rendered necessary the definition of a model for declension in Czech. This model contains a detailed classification of the paradigms and rules for the realization of vocalic and consonantal alternations. It enables the morphological annotation of required forms, the didactic presentation of the morphological system of Czech on the learning platform, as well as the automatic error diagnosis. Diagnosis is carried out by the comparison of an erroneous production with hypothetical forms generated from the stem of the required form. An appraisal of the diagnosis of the productions collected on CETLEF shows that the vast majority of errors can be interpreted with the aid of this technique.
On variants in Czech morphology

The aim of this thesis is to introduce a problem which was not very well developed prior to the implementation of the Czech National Corpus: Czech morphological variants. All these variants were analyzed from the perspective of different Czech grammar standards (Čechová, 2000; Česká mluvnice, 1981; Příruční mluvnice češtiny, 1995; Akademická mluvnice II, 1986; and Šmilauer, 1972), the Czech literary dictionary (Slovník spisovné češtiny pro školu a veřejnost, 2004) and the Czech National Corpus (Korpus Syn2005). Analyzed variants were taken from all the Czech nouns: masculine animate and inanimate, feminine and neutral nouns. Due to the limited extension of this work, it was not possible to include variants from substantives with a variation in gender, adjectival substantives, indeclinable substantives, territorial substantives and personal substantives. Alternative methods in teaching Czech as a foreign language

1 Abstract This diploma introduces three alternative methods taught in the study of foreign languages - a method of suggestopedy, Nepustil's method and the Act and Speak method. The purpose of this work is to approach the methods from a historical and methodological perspective. The main focus is aimed at inspections of alternative schools, supplied with student's questionnaires and the visual material from classes. The theoretical part discusses methods from a historical perspective, the progress and presentation of grammar and learning material. Furthermore introducing the basic concept and features of alternative methods with the posibility of applying them during the teaching of Czech language for foreigners. The practical part introduces research made up of inspections at alternative schools along with interviews with founders and successors of these methods. As analysis of the questionnaires that explore the opinions and awareness of teachers about the effectivity and usefulness of untraditional methods in teaching is also a part of it. Practical inspections and conclusions based on the results of questionnaires showed the Act and Speak method to be the most beneficial method. Poprvé jsem se s češtinou setkala v roce 1995 v Londýně. Tehdy Jsem chodila do londýnské jazykové školy, abych zlepšila svou angličtinu. Tam bylo i několik českých studentů. Věděla j sem, že existuje země jménem Česká republika, přestože jsem se seznámila s lidmi z této země poprvé v životě a poprvé jsem slyšela, jak ti lidé mluví svým jazykem - češtinou. Nepamatuji si, jestli na mě tehdy udělala čeština nějaký zvláštní dojem. exoticky jako ostatní jazyky. Asi ten, že čeština zní stejně V roce 1997 jsem návštívila Českou republiku jako turista. To bylo moje druhé setkání s češtinou. Tehdy jsem ovšem neuměla ani jediné české slovo, a proto jsem během svého desetidenního pobytu všude mluvila anglicky. Přesto j sem slyšela češtinu kolem sebe a viděla jsem plakáty nebo nápisy napsané česky. Je jasné, že jsem věděla, jak čeština zní a jak se píše česky mnohem lépe, než tehdy v Londýně. Další setkání s češtinou bylo v Japonsku. Zanedlouho po návratu z cesty po České republice jsem náhodou objevila dvanáctidenní intenzivní kurz češtiny nedaleko od svého města. Důvod, proč jsem se ho zúčastnila, byl jednoduchý. Protože jsem vlastně nevěděla, že něco takového ve sousedním městě existovalo, myslela jsem si, že by byla škoda nechat si ujít takovou příležitost, kterou neměl každý.
