Josefa Menšíková and civil society of Německý Brod in the second half of the nineteenth century

In my diploma thesis I deal with the history of the Německý (today Havlíčkův) Brod in the nineteenth century. I am watching the fate of Josefa Menšíková, Czech patriot and the local mayor's wife. But the diploma work is not limited to one region. Partly I devoted to the town history of Třebíč and Tišnov or phenomenon of Czech emigration to the United States related to the area of Nebraska. Throughout my diploma thesis, I notice the local self-government of the Německý Brod, transformation of the city and its inhabitants and fates of Josefa Menšíková friends. Central School Association

The work deals with Central School Association from its establishment in 1880 to its dissolution in 1951. At first it approaches social and political situation in the 80s of the 19th century, thus period of rise of national defensive organizations. After that it analyses the issue of the minority education. Subsequently it describes foundation of Central School Association and changes in its organization. It monitors activity of Central School Association in three stages and it focuses on period after 1918. In the end it shows cooperation of Central School Association with National Czech Council as an example their dispute regarding of the national stamp.
Socio-cultural Activity of the Czech Clergy in the 1860's: The Vicariate of Sedlčany Under the Leadership of B. M. Kulda 1860-1870

The theme of the work is the role of the lower clergy in Czech society sixties of the 19th century. Against the backdrop of broader social-context situation is approached in Sedlčany Vicariate, where the writer and patriotic priest Beneš Metod Kulda was a vicar in the years 1860-1870. The work deals with the identity of national Czech lower clergy, his sentiments and activities. Special emphasis is placed on coping with the liberalization of society, to work in the education and attitude to national issues. The work shows thought and action clergy to specific examples, which can often be called typical. At the same time, we describe the events that were beyond the average, and in some cases have resonance beyond vicariate. In conflict situations is confronted with the sight of clergy ideological opponents of view. Analysis of the relationships and mindsets of actors reveals the background multifaceted social events in the years when deciding on the future direction of the Habsburg monarchy and the Catholic Church.
Socio-cultural activity of the Czech clergy in the 1860's: the vicariate of Sedlčany under the leadership of B. M. Kulda 1860-1870

The main topic of this study is the role of the lower echelons of the clergy in Czech society in the 1860's. Against a backdrop of the broader socio-political context, the study focuses on the Vicariate of Sedlčany, where the writer and patriotic priest Beneš Metod Kulda served as vicar from 1860 to 1870. The work deals with the identity of the ethnically Czech lower echelons of the clergy, their mentality and activities. Special emphasis is placed on how they coped with the liberalization of society, on their work in education and their attitudes towards national issues. The study depicts the mentality and activities of the clergy on the basis of specific examples, which can frequently be termed typical. At the same time, it describes unusual events that in some cases attracted attention beyond the borders of the vicariate itself. In conflict situations, the perspective of the clergy are also compared to the views of their ideological opponents. An analysis of the relationships and mentalities of the main actors reveals the multifaceted background of social life in the years when decisions were being made about the future direction of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Catholic Church.
The entry of civil engineers into the municipal government of Prague at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century

This thesis attempts to capture the development of the position of civil engineers, who tried to achieve the position of an academic educated elite in the society of the 2nd half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The complete professionalisation of engineers was the condition "sine qua non" to the recognition of civil engineers as part of the academic intelligentsia, and that was one of the main reasons why civil engineers sought to enter the municipal government. The aim of the thesis is to complete the research of the transformation of the municipal government from the "honorationes" into the "executive" government in the city of Prague. The thesis describes the historic development of the technical intelligentsia as a new part of academic educated elite, it shows the reasons that led to the engagement of civil engineers in the process of the modernization of the city, and especially shows the rivalry between them and the jurists. The example of engineer Jan Kaftan shows a successful career of one technician, who thanks to, among other skills, his technical knowledge, was elected to the Austrian parliament. The Bohemian nobility in the second half of the 19th century. Noble estate in the Bohemia at the turn of the ages: The analysis of economic conditions of three aristocratic families. The second half of the 19th century and early 20th century is a time of transformation, with one phase of economic, social and societal history ending in Austria in 1848. This newly emerging world full of changes must also be addressed by the Bohemian nobility, which is also one of the groups affected by these changes. Abolition of forced labor and the subsequent purchase of land lead to the release of an unprecedented amount of free capital. The Bohemian nobility look for business disciplines in which they invest this free capital, but at the same time they must deal with the transfer of their landed property from patrimonial management to economic estate. The nobility is therefore forced to innovate their agricultural production, forest production and to improve the management of their estates; they invest their free capital not only in manufacturing, but also in industries unrelated to the agricultural operation of their ancestral estates, while also investing in the construction of railways. Carl Count of Chotek - the Aristokrat at the Turn of two Periods.

(in English): This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the famous Czech aristocrat, official and philanthropist Charles Chotek in his roles of life. Karel Chotek successively held the authority of the provincial chief of Trieste, Innsbruck and Prague. The period of his administration in the Czech countries is characterized by great development of economy and social institutions. The thesis is divided into two major parts, the first is represented by the study and the second are supplements with the editions of used archives - diary, memorabilia and autobiography. The chapters are divided thematically-chronologically according to a roles, which Count Chotek in his life held - a nobleman, son, brother, student, husband, father, officer, philanthropist, traveller, observer of the revolutionary year of 1848, a businessman, builder, landowner and social being. The exception is chapter two, which gives a theoretical introduction to the topic of research of diaries, memoirs and autobiographies. In conclusion, I think about the personality, character and temperament of Count Chotek.
The Type of Publicly-Active Family of Prague City-Dwellers at The Turn of 19th and 20th Century. The Case of John and Ann Podlipný.

The thesis intends to show, using the specific example of Jan and Anna Podlipný, a typical Prague family active in public life on the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Both the public activities and the private lives of the married couple are described. The thesis introduces the family of both Podlipnýs, particular focus being on the free time activities of the family members; home theatre is of special importance in this context. The core of the thesis is a discussion of the public activities of Jan and Anna Podlipný. Public life of Jan Podlipný is divided in his work for the Prague administration and in various interest groups. Emphasis is placed on years 1897-1900 when he was the mayor of Prague; the thesis also partially discusses his work as a lawyer and a member of the Young Czech Party. Podlipný is also introduced as a member of the Sokol union, the first head of the Czech Sokol Community and a member of the Society for the Construction of a Monument of Master Jan Hus. Podlipný's efforts in the cooperation between Sokol and the Union of French Gymnasts are also mentioned, and briefly also the other organisations he was active in. Anna Podlipná is introduced primarily as a wife and a mother. Emphasis is placed on her activities in the Domácnosť (Household) and České srdce (Czech Heart)...

Based on a unique source, Albin Honzáková memory and preserved records, such as extensive correspondence and publications. AAbbssttrraakktt This diploma thesis deals with historical development of village Solopysky situated 12 kilometers from Kutná Hora in Central Bohemia. In the paper is reflected interwar period from 1918 to 1938 which brought a lot of turning points. There is described influence of those milestones on local inhabitants (e.g. establishment of first Czechoslovakia republic, Munich Agreement). Administrative area of this thesis is focused on mechanisms of operation, organization, structure, personnel management, power and municipal governments' activities. Attention is paid to the then legislation and its introduction into practice. The author tries to clarify tendencies of the municipal economy including municipal budget and dealing with the municipal property. Cultural area of this thesis is focused on school environment, activities of local associations and on the political activities including municipal elections. There is also mentioned description of daily life and atmosphere of the village according to the memories of the local old resident - Mr. Václav Sova. The aim of this thesis is confrontation of narrative sources with sources of the official provenance. Particularly thematic viewpoint was taken in consideration during writing this paper.
