Impartiality and value-based education in the teaching of political geography in high schools in Czechia: The case of the war in Yugoslavia
Gáthy, Zuzana ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
According to the Education Act the education is supposed to be apolitical, but at the same time the teacher is supposed to educate students about values. The question is how far it is better to remain impartial in order to avoid influencing students and how far it is better to present personal opinion for the purpose of value-based education. The aim of the thesis was to find out how high school teachers in Czechia perceive the need and possibilities of impartial teaching of political geography and related value-based education. The second objective was to propose suitable methods for impartial teaching of political geography in high school geography classes. Part of the thesis is specifically focused on the teaching of the war in Yugoslavia and the discussion of the impartial conception of this conflict. The research involved a quantitative survey involving 277 respondents from among high school teachers, followed by 9 qualitative interviews with high school teachers. The core of the work is the results of the research, which are compared with each other and presented in the form of graphs, tables and excerpts from interviews. Czech high school geography teachers support impartial teaching of political geography and try to achieve an impartial approach. However, value-based education is a more...
Political ideologies in the local politics of selected Czech towns
Šebesta, Jan ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis deals with political ideologies in the local politics of selected cities in Czechia. The aim of the research is to explore whether political parties at local level are formed by political ideologies and to find out what their ideological positions are affected by. To represent political ideologies, I have chosen two ideological dimensions (the left-right economic dimension and the GAL-TAN socio-cultural dimension), of which 10 parties in 33 selected Czech cities were evaluated. The thesis is primarily based on data from the "Election calculator" for elections to municipal councils in 2022. Based on its questions, an evaluation scale was created for each dimension, which determines the ideological positions of parties in selected cities. The thesis thus verifies the applicability of the concept of ideological dimensions at the local level in Czechia. The theoretical part of the thesis describes political ideologies and the possibilities of their classification. The chapter mainly discusses the meaning and the defining characteristics of ideological dimensions. Factors that affect the ideological positions of the parties and the specifics of Czech politics are also discussed, with a focus on its local level. In the methodological part, the possibilities of commonly used research methods of...

Weyrová, Dominika ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Shavit, Anna (referee)
This thesis deals with political billboards and posters in the city space before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021. For the research purposes of this thesis, three cadastres with different compositions of usually living inhabitants (Stodůlky, Černý Most, and Dejvice) were selected and then compared with each other. The aim was first to examine the spatial distribution of the campaigns in these Prague cadastres, whether they differed in their frequency or even in the content of their messages. Next, the perception of billboards and posters in election campaigns by potential voters was investigated through a questionnaire survey, and in the last part, the strategies used by individual political groups when working with billboards and posters were examined. The first output was map displays, which showed differences in frequency in the selected cadastres, but content differences within cadastres were not noted in the research. Another output was the fact that people generally notice billboards or posters in the city space, some of them perceived rather positively, others rather negatively, but the vast majority of them rejected being influenced by them during the elections. The interviews with party representatives about deployment strategies...

Evaluation of Integration of the European Union Member States
Vitvar, Vít ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Havlíček, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the evaluation of the integration of the European Union member states through a new index that includes indicators of institutional, economic and civic integration. The main objective is to determine how integrated the countries are from these three perspectives and whether there are any spatial or developmental similarities. The work is framed by theories of integration and placed in the context of existing research in the field of European integration evaluation. An index is calculated based on five indicators from each dimension, but no relation is found between the results of these dimensions. Some similarities can be found when comparing the results of the new index with those of older indices, and similarly, links have been found for countries joining the Union at the same or similar times and between countries from the same regions.
The role of regional identity in the presentation of municipalities in selected regions of Czechia
Kuncl, David ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Šifta, Miroslav (referee)
The main concern of this thesis is the role of regional identity in representation of unicipalities. Text is based on the theory of institutionalization of region by Paasi with focus on development of symbolic shape of region. Data are collected from official municipalities websites within four various places in the Czechia. Two of these places are regions with strong regional identity and two are with weak regional identity. The goal of the thesis is finding differences in use of symbols between the selected areas. First, the elements of symbols are examined. Then the symbols are divided into local and regional types, whose mutual ratio is subsequently rated. The results show difference between studied areas in the elements of symbols and in the ratio of local and regional symbols too. The regions with strong regional identity have more symbols with sociocultural elements and their regional symbol ratio is higher. Keywords: regional identity, institutionalization of region, institucionalizace, symbolic shape of region, symbols, municipalities websites, ORP Domažlice, ORP Moravská Třebová, ORP Kyjov, ORP Tachov
Political awareness and engagement of Czech highschool students
Macek, Lukáš ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Hána, David (referee)
This diploma thesis puts into context political awareness and engagement of young people due to their educational process at secondary schools. Its goal is to evaluate fulfilment of the objectives previously set on the Czech grammar schools level. Specific focus is given on key competences which widen political and civic skills of pupils. With the help of extensive quantitative questionnaire which deals with geopolitical topics and following specifically targeted qualitative interviews, level of political awareness and factors which influence it are both verified. Quantitative survey proves sufficient level of political knowledge among grammar schools students and also positive influence of school as an institution thanks to special seminars. At the same time it confirms much higher level of knowledge in comparison with secondary schools students. Personal interviews with selected students verify their high level of political commitment; on the other hand respondents do not acknowledge influence of school in this particular topic. As study proves, factors which affect followed variables originate more likely from free time activities. Also gender and as far as school is concerned, only theme of special seminars is important. Key words: political awareness, political engagement, key competences
Pork barrel in Czechia in 2003-2009: spatial dimension and the identification of some causal factors
Hána, David ; Feřtrová, Marie (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is an attempt to reveal a regularity and dependence in spatial distribution of the pork barrel (i.e. the parliamentary grants) in the case of Czechia in 2003-2009. Moreover, the thesis attempts to identify some undermining factors of the proven spatial pattern in allocation of pork barrel financial sources. The selection of supported projects highly depends on subjective preferences of particular deputies being influenced by many factors. Accordingly, the diploma thesis examines a role of the spatial distribution of deputies' places of living and their influences on the spatial allocation of the pork barrel through the state budget being approved in the Lower House.

Kokoš, Roman ; Brabcová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Hána, David (referee)
The dynamic change of pace and depth in international economic integration is making its impact on the global system more significant than ever before. After political changes in Czechia we have witnessed the growth of foreign economic activity by firms, which are now allowed to be part of liberalized global economical environment. The subject of interest chosen is the traditional Czech pencil manufacturer KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth. Which is one of the leading stationery producers who competes with its rivals on a global pitch. This company has a long history and trademark in manufacturing stationery goods. In 2000 after the takeover from PPF in 2000 longterm CEO and now owner Vlastislav Bříza, decided to create a holding that would follow the success in the stationery goods industry. This would functionally connect the various industries. Theoretical background is provided by global production networks, recently developed by geographers in Great Britain. From a geographical perspective, pencil manufacturing has its sources traditionally dispersed. This leads to investigating how these sources are connected and the way the production line reaches the final end product. Another noticeable phenomenon is the concentration of stationery producers in South Bohemia. This region may have valuable traditional...
