Photographer Marie Tomanová and American Youth

This master's thesis aims to explore the body of documentary and photographic work by Marie Tomanová, a prominent Czech photographer who has spent more than a decade living in the United States. Tomanová is now an established part of a long-standing tradition of American documentary photographers who seek to capture the emerging young generations and their culture. In its theoretical part, the thesis will provide a brief history of youth culture in American society from the beginning of the 20th century all the way to the early aughts. It will explore the context in which photographers have depicted youth culture since the mid-20th century, with a particular focus on Marie Tomanová's work as one of the most prominent contemporary representatives of the genre. The practical part consists of a visual social semiotic analysis of selected photographs by various photographers introduced earlier in the thesis. The analysis will attempt to decode the fundamental values encoded within these photographs of young Americans, compare any changes in these values over time and also focus on differences in approach among the individual authors. The Russian invasion of Ukraine through the eyes of selected media outlets and theirs accounts on social media platforms

The central theme of the thesis is the coverage of the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, the liberation of the city of Buch and the first foreign trip of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by BBC News, CNN and CT24 and their social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the concepts of war and peace journalism, the transformation of social networks into a new source of information and the related information overload and the role of social networks in its formation. It also explains the circumstances of selected events for further analysis in the practical part of the thesis. In the research part, codes are defined according to which the posts of the selected media outlets are subsequently analyzed in the specified time windows on Instagram and Facebook. The posts are examined both with respect to their graphical form and their content. For video posts, the origin of the video is distinguished, as well as its content and its' most prominent features. Emphasis is placed on posts with drastic content and each media outlet's approach to such material. The analysis also takes into account the frequency of posts published by each media in selected time windows. Documentary Photography: The Ďáblice Housing Estate

The primary focus of this bachelor thesis is centred around the architecturally significant Ďáblice housing estate. The theoretical part delves into its history and architecture, incorporating an interview with architect Ondřej Tuček, the grandson of the chief designer of the estate. Its photographical section presents the basic concepts and history of three pertinent photographic genres: documentary, street and urban photography. Furthermore, the thesis includes an annexed photographic publication dedicated to contemporary life in the Ďáblice housing estate, titled Krásné sídliště Ďáblice.

Danish journalists in Central and Eastern Europe: Work, motivation and role perception

Foreign correspondents act as gatekeepers to our world and their output can be influential. This study examines the motivations, work and role perceptions of Danish journalists who report on Central and Eastern Europe. For this study 10 semi-structured interviews with different types of correspondents were conducted in March 2023. Bourdieu's field theory was applied to understand the practice of journalism: how these journalists interact in the field and what they perceive as the "rules" of the game. This study shows that personal and idealistic motives drive the journalists. The journalists experience a high degree of autonomy, which according to Bourdieu equals power and is considered the ultimate endgame for journalists. This study finds that the journalists see their role as "curators" or "observers" that report as objectively as possible events in Central and Eastern Europe. Thus, they ascribe to very traditional values of journalism and role perceptions. In a prestigious field like foreign correspondence, one could assume that the struggle for power is intense. However, this study finds that even though the journalists possess very different positions in the field, they ascribe to similar ideals of journalism and do not challenge the field.

Post-colonial discourse in Spanish-speaking media: Framing of October 12th in Spanish and Mexican newspapers

In the aftermath of colonial relations, the vestiges of colonialism persist in contemporary societies, manifesting themselves in spheres such as economics, politics and culture; and perpetuating inequalities between nations. The commemoration of October 12th illustrates this issue. This date marks the arrival of Columbus in America in 1492 and is celebrated as Spain's national day and in former Spanish colonies throughout the Americas. However, the celebration has faced increasing criticism due to its colonial origins. This research employs a qualitative news frame analysis to investigate the framing of October 12th celebrations in Spanish and Mexican newspapers from 2012 to 2022. The analysis reveals a predominantly critical perspective in the portrayal of the celebration, leading to increased polarisation around the event. The presence of colonial discourse, which glorifies the colonial era and exempts the colonisers from past wrong doings, has been identified and is more prominent in Spanish publications. By shedding light on the framing of the October 12th celebrations, this study contributes to understanding the persistence of colonial legacies in the media. Visual framing of the war in Ukraine

The thesis "Visual Framing of the War in Ukraine" examines how Czech and foreign newspapers construct the media image of this conflict in published photographs. The theoretical focus of the thesis is mainly on framing theory and its visual dimension, agenda setting and peace journalism, using this normative direction as a starting point for the frames analysed in the practical part of the thesis. The analysis combines quantitative and qualitative approaches The aim of the quantitative part of the analysis was to fill in the previously missing data on the visual framing of the war in Ukraine by Czech and foreign media. Furthermore, it focused on the development of the frequency of photographic coverage of the analysed conflict and the identification of the roles of actors appearing in the images. The qualitative part attempted to explore the findings of the quantitative part in more depth by analysing a selected part of the images depicting the identified frames.

The fate of Czechoslovak paratroopers after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich

The bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The practical part is a document called Czechs Don't Give Up: The Fate of the Bodies of Czechoslovak Paratroopers. As the title suggests, the documentary film focuses on the fate of the bodies of Josef Gabčík, Jan Kubiš, Josef Valčík, Adolf Opálka, Josef Bublík, Jan Hrubý, and Jaroslav Švarc. In the first part, there is the atmosphere in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia from the accession to the office of the provisional Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich to the fight of the paratroopers in the Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. This part is presented through newsreels, photographs, and testimonies of historians, researchers, and relatives of Czechoslovak resistance fighters. In the second part, the documentary introduces events after the battle and covers the documented facts describing the fate of the bodies of the Czechoslovak paratroopers. Since their destiny is not notorious even after eighty years, this part also delivers new facts for investigation. The theoretical part serves as a starting point for the audiovisual material. Food Waste as a Disease of Our Times

This bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The practical part is a document called Food Waste as a Disease of Our Times, which maps this problem mainly in the Czech but also in the international context. It presents this social issue in a broader context and offers different insights into food waste. The documentary features experts on the issue, i.e. university professors, the founder of a non-profit organisation, a sociologist and a head of a food bank. Part of the film also focuses on activists who cook for the homeless or do dumpster diving. The film also includes representatives of supermarkets and their approach to food waste. The theoretical part deals with the description and definition of the film documentary. It introduces the different steps in the making of a documentary, from preparation, to production, to post-production. It also describes the specificities of the television documentary. The next part of the theoretical part presents a research on the topic and illustrates the issue of food waste with statistics and expert studies. The last part is a description and reflection of the production itself.
