The search for the grave of Abbess-Princess Mlada

The sister of Prince Boleslav II Princess Mlada is among the persons associated with the beginning of the Prague bishopric. As the founder of the monastery of St. George was worshiped in it. The place of her burial was forgotten and searched for since the Baroque period. In this context, attention is paid to the graves JK-102 and JK-110 in the chapel of St. Anne in the monastery and also to the relics taken from this chapel in the 17th century. Grave JK-110 was newly dated to around the year 1000.

Tuto práci bylo určitě možno napsat na mnoha místech jinak, zcela jistě lépe a často také více do hloubky. Nepopírám, že řady vytčených cílů bylo dosaženo pouze částečně a některé otázky zůstaly dokonce nezodpovězeny, přesto si ale myslím, že práce jako celek svůj základní účel splnila. Výsledky archeologického výzkumu často svojí nekonkrétností svádí ke spekulaci. V takovém případě jsem se vždy snažil o co možná nejserióznější přístup, který by bral ohled na všechny možné varianty řešení. Jestliže jsem byl nucen formulovat konkrétní závěry, pokoušel jsem se je podat vždy tak, aby bylo zřejmé, jaké důvody mne ke konečnému rozhodnutí vedly. Netvrdím, že výsledky, k nimž jsem při práci dospěl, odrážejí nějakou historickou pravdu a jsou tak jediné možné. Jsem si vědom, že jiný badatel může mít na věc odlišný názor, a budu proto rád za každou věcnou připomínku ke způsobu provedení i výsledkům mého dosavadního výzkumu. Čtenáři se pak dodatečně omlouvám, za všechny případné chyby, které v práci najde, a které padají pouze a jen na mou hlavu.

The town walls in Chrudim: thirty-six years of excavations

Archaeological research has documented the creation of fortifications in Chrudim in the second half of the 13th century. It proved the existence of half-cylindrical towers strengthening the city wall and documented the existence of the city castle. Attention was paid to the bailey walls and the 'Prachárna' bastion. Remains of suburban fortifications were newly identified.

Contribution to the settlement of the Prague Castle (documents and changes of settlement in the west forecastle in place today's so called Northern Wing)

This thesis deals with the beginnings of the Prague Castle. The principal attention is mainly turned to a closer recognation of course of settlement in the original west forecastle, which means today's forecastles I, II and IV. In connection with this problem the principal goal of this thesis consists in processing of the research that Jan Frolík accomplished within the forecastle I and the forecastle IV in the building of today's so called Northern Wing in 1987. There were six trenches with features and habitation layers of the Early Middle Ages explored. These discovered archaeological sections were divided into horizons in chronological sequence on the basis of stratigraphy (reciprocal superposition of features), or in the case of habitation layers on the basis of ceramics. Subsequent analysis of ceramic material enabled to date them more precisely. Also processing and evaluation of the remaining archaeological artifacts, primarily bone artifacts and animal bones, is a part of this thesis. At the end of the thesis the results of the research are counted among the context of the evolution of so called west forecastle, alternatively of the general evolution of the history of Prague Castle.

Jan Hus, the Hussite movement and Eastern Bohemia. Conference papers

Articles summarize the historical development during the Hussite movement in Eastern Bohemia and archaeological evidence of life in Chrudim and in Chrudim region during the 14th and 15th centuries. The development of opinions on Jan Hus and the Hussite movement during the 19th century is described. The celebration activities of Jan Hus and his monuments are mentioned, too.

Early Modern archaeological assemblages from Prague Castle and period written and iconographic sources

The main goal of this work was to introduce Early Modern finds of ceramics and glass from Prague Castle. As a starting source for this study were used eight find collections of cesspits originating from the Prague Castle area belong to houses located along the northern and western edge of the Third Castle Courtyard. The above mentioned collections of finds represent mainly features unearthed in the years 1925-1932 or 1957. The only recently discovered cesspit represents a feature (OBJ. 1) from the House No. 34/IV on the Jiřské square. The study is attempting to answer the question, in the cooperation with archive sources, how much can the cesspit-fillings reflect social position of their users.
