Avionics terminology. Preparatory work for a German-Czech dictionary of avionics terminology
Kováriková, Eva ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Berglová, Eva (referee)
Language for special purposes ("LSP") is a variety of standard language, whose primary objective is exchange of information among specialists (speakers of one or more languages). Among other things, the LSP speciality consists of lexical units, so-called technical vocabulary, included in technical dictionaries. This thesis deals with issues regarding the creation of a German-Czech Dictionary of Aerial Terms, a multilingual technical dictionary, which is primarily designed for translators, interpreters, students and readers of popular science texts and easier LSP literature. The core of the dictionary consists of vocabulary from the area of aircraft construction and types of airplanes, aircraft engine, equipment and emergency devices. By comparing concept systems from subareas of both languages, an essential analysis regarding questions in the fields of synonymy and equivalence was accomplished, and 500 vocabulary items with linguistic as well as encyclopaedic information were compiled. These terms will now be subjected to lexicographic and technical correction.
Learning and teaching grammar at high schools. German as a second language
Coufalová, Hana ; Dovalil, Vít (advisor) ; Berglová, Eva (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to find out about the situation in teaching German grammar at Czech upper-secondary schools. It examines selected aspects of the teaching by means of questionnaires for German teachers and their students. Further it analyses the most frequently used textbook of German "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?", which is evaluated by the author as a negative example among the textbooks. As its counterpart she analyses the textbook "Schritte International" which is, on the contrary, an example of a good textbook. On the basis of the analysis she proposes a tentative list of principles, according to which the teacher should choose an appropriate textbook. The author tries to determine basic theoretical requirements for teaching German grammar and she compares them with reality, which does not seem to correspond to this demands. She concludes by providing suggestions for improving the current situation.
On the status of Czech in Austria: an analysis of the demand for Czech in Vienna with special regard to the relationship between language, economy and culture
Belková, Eva ; Dovalil, Vít (advisor) ; Berglová, Eva (referee)
The aim of this study is to describe the status of the Czech language in Austria with special regard to the relationships between language and economy. The work is focused on the position of Czech among other foreign languages in the field of school education, and generally its position on the foreign-language-market in Austria. The final part of the thesis illustrates the demand for Czech language in Vienna. The research is based on examination of teaching Czech language at schools, high schools, universities and 15 different language schools and institutes in Vienna, all randomly selected from the spectrum of adult-education institutions. The interpretation of the results is party based on the theory of different languagevalue ascribed to individual languages and partly on information derived form the analysis of the media content. My interpretation further draws on the statistics of foreign language teaching in Austria released by the Austrian Language Competence Center (Österreichisches Sprachenkompetenzzentrum) and the Austrian Ministry of Education (Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur). The economic indicators of the Austrian foreign trade balance in the last five years are accessible on the web pages of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Österreich). According to...
Cross-subjects topics in the grammar school TEFL
Zenkerová, Nela ; Mothejzíková, Jarmila (advisor) ; Berglová, Eva (referee)
The overall objective of this paper is to consider possible ways of incorporating "cross-subject topics" into the grammar school curriculum when teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), in particular the third year of a four-year course (where a course spans more than four years this would be the equivalent). 1 New Concept of Czech Education The first chapter enumerates the most important changes brought about by the new curricular reform. To name but a few: education should primarily focus on creating and developing "key skills". The Curricular Framework for Grammar Schools (Rámcový vzdělávací program pro gymnázia) which is relevant for the purposes of this paper specifies the following key skills: Learning, Problem Solving, Communication, Social and Personal skills, Citizenship skills, and Entrepreneurial skills. Another requirement stated in the Framework is the schools' obligation to incorporate "cross-subject topics" into their own school curriculum ("školní vzdělávací program"). In the Framework five statutory cross-subject topics can be found: Personal and Social Education, Education of Thinking in European and Global Context, Multicultural Education, Environmental Education, and Media Education. The Framework also suggests various ways of incorporating these topics into the school curriculum....

Anglicisms in contemporary German language and their lexicographic treatment in a bilingual dictionary
Hrubešová, Michaela ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Berglová, Eva (referee)
The paper directly follows onto the Large German-Czech Academic Dictionary project, which is being compiled at the Prague German Studies Institute since 2000. The author of the paper has been actively involved in the preparation of the dictionary entries, and these serve as the material base of her work. The entries were selected according to the active needs of the project - the inducement for the paper was an analysis of approximately 600 substantive Anglicisms which are present in the Duden Universal Dictionary. The paper summarizes theoretical concepts of Anglicisms in the German language - specifically the history of their borrowings, their classification, integration processes and their influence on the contemporary German language. The pivotal part of the paper focuses on the analysis of the dictionary entries of the selected substantive Anglicisms in German dictionaries and in the German-Czech dictionaries and points out their deficiencies, which are then illustrated by specific examples. The analysis proceeds following individual linguistic planes, i.e. spelling, phonetics (pronunciation, respectively transcription, accent), morphology and semantics. The entries in the German dictionaries show problems on the spelling level caused by dual alternatives, which list both the original English spelling...

Analysis of passive voice use according to German language textbooks for adult foreign speakers
Gregorová, Katarína ; Berglová, Eva (advisor) ; Vrbová, Jaroslava (referee)
Aim of this study is to compare Norwegian and German passive voice and to describe problems that Norwegian students can have when acquiring German passive voice. The rules how to form passive voice in Norwegian and German are similar due to the fact that these languages are related. In both languages there exists two kinds of analytical passive voice - one is based on constructions with a verb "werden"/"bli" and the other with a verb "sein"/"vrere". In addition, there are two more kinds of passive-voice in Norwegian - a complex passive voice and a synthetic s-passive. Both in German and in Norwegian can be passive voice expressed also by other constructions - by so called paraphrases of passive. Although there exist equivalents for alm ost all these paraphrases in both languages, in Norwegian are the paraphrases used not so often as in German. As a part ofthe study there were analyzed sentences created by Norwegian students. These sentences should have expressed passive voice. Surprisingly, most common mi stakes were not in the expressions of passive voice, but in vocabulary that was used.
Activation of speaking skills of advanced students
Melkusová, Petra ; Berglová, Eva (advisor) ; Rössler, Paul (referee)
The theoretical part of my Diploma thesis deals with activation of speaking of advanced students during German language lessons. The emphasis is especially put on tools that can be used to achieve students' higher speaking activity. The newest information in the field of educational objectives provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is also taken into consideration. In the practical part I present my own ideas how to liven up lessons and force students to speak actively.
