Anxiety in ESL Teaching to Adult Students

This work deals with anxiety being involved in ESL teaching to adult students. Its causes and negative consequences are discussed. Its aim is to reveal whether anxiety is a real issue in ESL that should be acknowledged and if it is, what can be done in order to prevent it or at least identify it and be able to work with it. The theoretical part deals with the delimitation of the term anxiety and puts anxiety in the psychological and pedagogical context. The development of research in this area is described and the relevant findings are presented. Practical part consists of mixed research dealing with the extent to which anxiety impacts foreign language learning in the first part. The second part based on interviews with anxious learners brings into light the specific causes of foreign language classroom anxiety which allows the conclusions in the form of practical recommendations to be drawn for English teachers. Teaching English Through English: Giving Instructions at A1-A2 level students

This diploma thesis aims at presenting principles and techniques of giving instructions during English lessons and their practical use. It stresses the awareness of the importance of delivering clear and understandable instructions and of their influence on students' comprehension. Theoretical part of this thesis describes general rules of giving instructions and focuses on instruction techniques suitable for students' learning styles. It also deals with the language of instruction appropriate for A1 - A2 level students. Practical part consists of applying the theoretical principals in practice through an action research. The aim of the practical part is the improvement of the author's instructions. The findings have shown that modifying the language of instruction as well as using various verbal and non- verbal instruction techniques promotes the students' comprehension of instructions. AJ-NJ DIPLOMA THESIS Use of film applications in English language teaching: Case study of the mobile application Mooveez Abstract This diploma thesis concerns with analysis of the software application Mooveez - English with movies which offers a new method of learning foreign languages by watching movies, fairy tale movies or documentaries. In the theoretical part the theory and methodology of current learning and teaching foreign languages is described as well as the development of education in the field of foreign languages. The theoretical part also contains information about modern technologies used in contemporary foreign language learning and teaching. The practical part depicts and evaluates the software application Mooveez in detail which includes its principles, origin, methodology and functions. This part also informs about the usage of Mooveez as a tool and as a method. Then, it is described how this application is presented in public, and whether there are other applications which could be compared with the application Mooveez - English with movies. Use of Suggestopedia and its current forms in English language teaching

This diploma thesis is concerned with the use of Suggestopedia and Superlearning in English language teaching. The theoretical part focuses on the historical and theoretical context of the methods, the description of their aims, processes and techniques. Furthermore, Communicative approach and its closely related methods are briefly explained, as they are also connected to Altissima language school where the research was done. The practical part deals with the analysis of two observed lessons where the principles of Suggestopedia and Superlearning were used. Moreover, the lectors' statements and learners' comments are scrutinized.

Teaching Silent Letters to Czech Learners

This diploma thesis follows up on the bachelor thesis which dealt with the phenomenon of silent letters and which was created by the same author. This bachelor thesis has revealed that Czech learners tend to mispronounce every fifth word containing a silent letter which should be seen as alarming. The diploma thesis therefore tries to find some way how to change this situation. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the analysis of various techniques and materials which are concerned with silent letters. In the practical part this materials are adjusted to the needs of the Czech learners in order to create a battery of activities which would cover this area of pronunciation. In the next step these activities will be introduced in English classrooms. In the research we will monitor the progress of the respondents over a larger period of time and assess how effective the created activities are.

Radio role play: possibilities and limitations of use of fictional radio broadcast in English language teaching

This dissertation thesis focuses on the use of drama in English language teaching. In the theoretical part the field of drama in ELT is elaborated in terms of its principles, methods and examples of practical use. Based on the outlined theoretical basis the technique radio role play is introduced. The main aim of the thesis was to identify and verify possibilities and limitations of the technique applied in English language teaching. To meet the aim of the thesis action research was used as the research design employing a range of data collection methods, e.g. questionnaires with pupils; interviews with pupils, teachers and critical friends. Content analysis was used to process the collected data and the analysis was further interpreted with the support of contextual information regarding educational setting in which the research was carried out and contextual material (lesson plans, teaching material, audio and video recordings). Within the four cycles of action research initial hypotheses, which were formulated before the actual research, were verified. The research findings show that the radio role playing contributes to the development of speaking as a language skill (mainly fluency and spontaneity of speech), improvisation skills, creativity and non-verbal communication. Drama techniques in soft CLIL lessons in a lower-secondary class

This diploma thesis is focused on acquiring communicative competence in teaching the English language as a foreign language. It is based on the presumption that students are not aware of some components of communication which partake in understanding when communicating in a foreign language (context of situation, nonverbal communication, paralinguistic features). This assumption is being verified via questionnaires. The theoretical basis describes the grounding and benefits of drama techniques used in teaching a foreign language and The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method. Both these approaches are used for preparation of three experimental lesson plans which are put into practice. Video recordings are made which, along with information from students and their teacher, serve as a detailed analysis of the whole experiment.

ESP - Developing a Course for Aviation English

The diploma thesis deals with the development of an ESP (English for specific purpose) course for aviation English. The theoretical part introduces the methodology for ESP course development, the demands on the teacher and other specifics associated with ESP; the practical part focuses on the contents of the course and its evaluation based on the feedback provided by the teacher and the students. In the conclusion the results of the feedback are discussed and the possible solutions suggested.

Teaching English to Pupils with Dysorthography

TITLE: Teaching English to Pupils With Dysorthography AUTHOR: Bc. Monika Reslerová DEPARTMENT: Department of English Language and Literature SUPERVISOR: Mgr. Klára Uličná, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis relates the issue of dysorthography in connection to EFL instruction with a special attention paid to lower secondary schools. The theoretical part of the text contains basic information on special educational needs, followed by a chapter on Specific Learning Difficulties, their causes and symptoms. The concept of dysorthography is explained and its possible consequences on acquisition of English spelling and grammar described, followed by a list of recommended approaches, methods, techniques and aids which can be useful for teaching English to dysorthographic pupils. The practical part of the text gives an account of a multiple-case study which was carried out among experienced English teachers at schools that pay special attention to children with SEN. The research is focused on the teachers' experience and know-how and compares the obtained data to the recommendations given in the theoretical part.
