Relations between the town Cheb and Bohemian nobility in the Late Middle Ages

This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the relations between the town of Cheb and Bohemian nobility in the late Middle Ages (from the second half of the 14th century to the beginning of the 16th century) with special interest in the period of the Hussite wars and the reign of King George of Podebrady. The thesis looks at these relations on two levels - conflicts (wars and courts) and non-violent (commerce, mutual assistance, information sharing) and tries to characterise and compare these phenomena. The thesis includes the case studies focusing on the question of the possibility of mutual interaction between examined subjects. It also focuses on particular noble families characterised by their transition from Cheb to Bohemia or otherwise.

John III. of Rosenberg, the grand prior of the Czech province of the Hospitallers and the regent of Rosemberger's house

The work is concerning John III of Rosenberg, the significant figure of the Hospitallers, the Order that had operated in the first half of the 16th century. He was a representative of significant Czech clan. The clan had been influencing Czech politi cal affairs and the nobility's status in the country over 600 years. The oldest family member of the Vitkovci (Witikonids), Vitek (Witiko) of Prcice, was present at Royal Court and his descendants had performed diplomatic duties ordered by Czech kings many times. They had reached due to their merits some of the privileges provided by rulers and those had assured them the position on the top of Czech nobility ladder until the complete end of the clan. The Witikonids had also been gaining owing to their marriage strategy estates in Austria frontier areas and that helped them to beeome independent from Czech governors. Exactly this fact contributed to reach an exeeptional status among Czech noble community. They had also found themselves in the situation fighting for the peers' emancipation even against kings many times. The Witikonids were successful in skillful using the situation when the Czech country had not been controlled by any strong royal power as for instance in the times of Jan Lucembursky (John the Blind) and through getting loans they acquired major...

Joined inseparably: The hostages in the Czech Middle Ages

The present M.A. thesis pursues the topic of hostageship for obligations in the Czech late Middle Ages, based on an analysis of epistolary correspondence, especially that between Ulrich II. of Rosenberg and his clients and opponents. Also examined are, for example, debt, purchase or mortgage agreements as a means which not only Ulrich II. tried to use for improving the bad financial situation of the house of Rosenberg. The study attempts to achieve a twofold objective: first, to clearly explain the individual terms that appear in the documents concerning the hostages, and second, based on case studies, to present an analysis of how the institute of hostageship worked in practice, with an emphasis on aristocratic honour and ties between the participants. From the methodological viewpoint, the analysis also shows that research into hostageship refines our understanding of how the Rosenberg clientele relations worked. Farmyards in medieval Bohemia and Moravia. The context of settlement and its economic potential.

1 Abstract In this work I deal with farmyards 13th-15th century, which formed an integral part of the medieval landscape. The main attention is paid to settlement-historical context and economic potential. Attention was also focused on the methods used, archaeological surveys and surface exploration. Nobility farmyards are divided into several types, according to the economic strategy and in material form. Their form depended on the owner, the monasteries were built large courtyards and nobility smaller. The main purpose of these farmyards was to provide the economic base of the nobility. There are also farmyards that served to financial income. The most common owners were a nobility and church institutions. Mostly they were situated to rural settlemet, where they were always dominant feature. Because this is not very frequent theme in Czech archeology, the aim of this work was also to summarize current knowledge. Given the breadth of the topic, I tried to include as much information, on the other hand, I had to approach selected topics in general. Work should, however, include the most important knowledge on this topic.

Personality of Jan Sádlo z Miličína a ze Smilkova

My dissertation deals with personality of Jan Sádlo of Smilkov, who was a noble man in king's sevices and who lived at he turned of 13th and 14th century. Dissertation tries to express elemental aspects of his life, which determined his life and this dissertation also tries to complete missing information about his family, property and also tries to find in which community he could be found and with whom he kept in touch with and how can these persons influence his personality. Dissertation also deals with his career, mainly his activity in king's Václav IV. court, where he became a influential person, who became involved in political situation in country during the beginning of hussite revolution. In dissertation is also covered his political downfall and his death. Life of Jan Sádlo of Smilkov was in my dissertation shown as an exapmle of low nobleman who could due to political situation become influential person and who could become involved in political development. .
