The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014 from the perspective of the diversionary theory of war
Sizaya, Bella ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the analysis of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014 from the perspective of the diversionary theory of war. The main objective is to determine whether this conflict was initiated by Vladimir Putin to divert attention from domestic issues within Russian society and to enhance his popularity rating for a subsequent victory in the upcoming presidential elections. The theoretical part defines the theory of diversionary wars and its components. In the practical section, the domestic political situation in Russia from 2011 to 2013 is analysed in terms of the assumptions and goals of diversionary conflicts. Subsequently, the period after the invasion is examined in terms of the tools and effects of diversionary foreign conflicts. The analysis includes monitoring the change in the president's popularity rating. Individual chapters address specific research questions that form the basis for achieving the main goal of this work.
The Strategic Position of Eastern Galicia within the West Ukrainian Republic
Pastuščak, Alan ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on a partial episode of international and diplomatic relations of one of the short-lived successor states of Austria-Hungary - the West Ukrainian Republic. When, in the fall of 1918, war broke out between Poland and the West Ukrainian Republic over which side would have a permanent claim to Eastern Galicia, France and Great Britain made repeated efforts to settle the disputes between the two states, but in the end the sovereignty of the West Ukrainian Republic was not preserved. The aim of the thesis is to determine the reasons why the West Ukrainian Republic as a geopolitical entity did not receive sufficient foreign support to ensure its existence and independence in the fight against Poland. For the research purposes of the work, a combination of several historiographical methodological procedures was used, such as direct, indirect, or progressive. The purpose of this procedure is a clear chronological description of key events, such as diplomatic missions, meetings of delegations, or the work of commissions preparing key documents. The work came to the conclusion that the West Ukrainian Republic collapsed mainly because of stubbornness on the part of its politicians, specifically in the case of the decision not to accept Barthélemy's demarcation line. After the...
Building cognitive resilience: example of Finland's countering of the Russian disinformation threat
Gorbatova, Maria ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee)
This thesis examines the issue of disinformation as one of the types of Russian hybrid warfare in European democracies. It is based on the hypothesis that the key to successfully countering disinformation is primarily the long-term building of social resilience, which cannot be replaced by reactive temporary measures. Among the many components of resilience, it mentions strategic government communication, a comprehensive approach to security, a strong role for traditional media, media literacy and the ability to cooperate politically on vital issues. Finland also dedicates sufficient resources to monitoring and countering foreign disinformation, with particular consideration for Russia, and can therefore anticipate and prepare for possible destabilisation in advance. The example of Finnish society during the COVID-19 pandemic shows how this resilience can be strengthened even in times of crisis, thus preventing the spread of disinformation.
Evaluation of the physical basis of the de facto state in the case of South Ossetia using Bjørn Møller's definition of statehood.
Dumpík, Marek ; Horák, Slavomír (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with de facto states, precisely the case of South Ossetia, which it assesses in terms of its statehood. Bjørn Møller's definition of statehood, which distinguishes between three dimensions of the state - institutional, conceptual, and physical basis - was used to assess the South Ossetian case. This bachelor thesis addresses the physical base dimension: the economy, territory, and population. The thesis also uses the approach of strong, weak, and failing states, which is used to define the indicators more precisely under study for each component of the physical base. The thesis is divided into three main sections. In the first theoretical part, the theoretical approaches used in the thesis are introduced, and with their help, the indicators under study are proposed. The second part then presents an overview of key historical events, which provides the necessary context for the third part, which deals with the physical base of South Ossetia itself. The aim of the paper is then to answer the question of whether South Ossetia can meet the requirements placed on the state in the dimension of the physical base.
Nation-building in independent Kazakhstan under Nursultan Nazarbayev
Dědák, Jan ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
The author of this thesis deals with building the national identity of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the leadership of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. President Nazarbayev ruled Kazakhstan autocratically for almost thirty years. One of the main goals of his policy was to build a strong national identity that would ensure the stability of the Nazarbayev regime in the ethnically and religiously diverse region of Central Asia, i.e. the continuation of his legacy. This work is a discursive analysis of selected speeches of the president across his entire administration. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the concept of discourse and describes the used methods of discursive analysis. It also defines national identity and the role of discourse in its construction based on the sedimentation model of national identity. One section of the theoretical part is devoted to the current research of Nazarbayev's discourse. In the analytical part of the thesis, specific speeches of the president are examined. In them, Nazarbayev describes and presents his vision and strategy for the development of Kazakhstan, while dealing with the topic of national identity. Discursive analysis always describes the political-social context of the speech, including the situation in international relations, and then...
The Ukrainian issue as a tool for the consodilation of Putin's Russia
Vaidišová, Natálie ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
This thesis investigates the Russian domestic political context of the escalation of relations. It verifies the claim that the Ukrainian issue has served the Russian political leadership over the past two decades to gradually consolidate internally Russian society, caught off guard by the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the Russian elite's use of anti-Ukrainian historical narratives can therefore be interpreted as a tool to stabilize post-Soviet Russian identity in a form that suits the current interests of the Russian power centre. What role historical politics has played in the use of the Ukrainian issue for Russia's internal consolidation is explored in this thesis through an analysis of the argumentation of the Russian Federation's leaders towards Ukraine, from the rise of Vladimir Putin to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This examination presupposes a detailed theoretical argumentation, to which I devote the first half of the thesis. Subsequently, I apply the theoretical-methodological findings in the second part of the thesis in the analysis of the speeches of Russian representatives, which I divide into the following main analytical units: the development of Russian-Ukrainian relations based on the performances of Russian presidents, the Ukrainian theme and narrative of the legacy of the...
