Visual framing of the war in Ukraine
Zítko, Tomáš ; Lábová, Sandra (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The thesis "Visual Framing of the War in Ukraine" examines how Czech and foreign newspapers construct the media image of this conflict in published photographs. The theoretical focus of the thesis is mainly on framing theory and its visual dimension, agenda setting and peace journalism, using this normative direction as a starting point for the frames analysed in the practical part of the thesis. The analysis combines quantitative and qualitative approaches The aim of the quantitative part of the analysis was to fill in the previously missing data on the visual framing of the war in Ukraine by Czech and foreign media. Furthermore, it focused on the development of the frequency of photographic coverage of the analysed conflict and the identification of the roles of actors appearing in the images. The qualitative part attempted to explore the findings of the quantitative part in more depth by analysing a selected part of the images depicting the identified frames.

Next part is dedicated to concept of new values, going from original Galtung / Ruge's taxonomy to contemporary revisited version of Harcup / O'Neill's. The practical part of this study is examining title photographs of 8 czech as well as foreign journals in 4 week long period. I am using method of content analysis, based on paper The content analysis of visual images and Gillian Rose's book Visual analysis. In my study I had applied news values to photographic materials. I chose combination of original Galtung / Ruge's concept together with Harcup / O'Neills contemporary revision, putting attention to entertaining aspects of media contents. The other paramteres I was following in my study were origin, size, topic, theme, negativity, orientation, gender content, etc. As a result I did find that there is very common way how dailyes handle with title photographs, which are having special status among other visual materials. Shifts of news values of photographs in the year-books of Týden and Pátek lidových novin magazines
Werner, Lukáš ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
The topic of the thesis is the comparison of photographs in year-books of magazine Týden and year-books of Lidové noviny newspaper from the point of view of the News values, as set by Johan Galtung and Mari Ruge and their successors, and also with respect to other qualities and values which are crucial in the process of selection of news photographs. The year-books of chosen media are the summaries of their production of given year, they are the selection of events which are considered the most important of that year. From the visual point of view, the year-books have much more space devoted to photography than their standard issues. The number of photographs and their size are therefore much higher. The thesis compares two pairs of year-books with a nine-year interval between them. This makes us compare the shifts and changes of their qualities in time, using a quantitative analysis research. The important part of the thesis is devoted to the routines of editorial staff, who are responsible for the selection of photographs. To explain this part, we used interviews with photo-editors or image editors. In these interviews we put emphasis on the very fundaments of editors work, the factors and circumstances which limit and affect his work and we also identified the values or qualities of photographs which are...
