A comparison of selected ethological aspects of chosen tortoise species
BLAŽEK, David
In this thesis we studied individuals of 4 species of tortoises, often bred in captivity genus Testudo species T. hermanni, T. graeca, T. horsfieldi and T. marginata, in possession of the ZOO Hluboká nad Vltavou. We studied and analyzed their morphological parameters, size measurements, their weight and biometrical indexes, wheather they follow described sexual dimorphism as it was found out in non-captive populations. We also studied and analyzed their food preferences to find out differences between sexes and between keeping individual animal versus a group, by giving them a choice between 4 types of food (the red cabbage, leaves of dandelion and clover, and carrot roots). Sexual dimorphism displayed by different body proportions was most apparent in Testudo hermanni. In specimen from the ZOO of Testudo horsfieldi a T. graeca was sexual dimorphism less prominent. Measured Testudo females from the ZOO were in lowest, approximate and highest values bigger and heavier than males of the same species, which mirrors data from other studies of non-captive populations. Males are quicker to get to and quicker to start eating food than females. Males preffered red cabbage and carrot while the females clover and dandelion. The amplitude of preference change between individual and group experiment was not correlated by individual´s sex, species or size. We found out no apparent hierarchical enforcement from the side of faster or bigger specimen in the feeding process.
The proposal of tourism development project
KOTKOVÁ, Marika
The main task of project is build a accommodation with a miniature zoo for tourism development in the area. For these purpose it is necessary reconstruction of a building which will further serve as a suite accommodation. There should be three suites and in each of them two rooms for sleeping, one room with double bed, one room with separated beds, a usefully equipped kitchenette connected to the living room, and bathroom with WC. As for the garden, there should be pens or cages with sheep, goats, horses, turtles, parrots, pheasants, peacocks, emus and kangaroos.
Feeding enrichment in selected Felids
PINTOVÁ, Radka
Environmental enrichment and welfare are important elements for animals in captivity. This study starts with general introduction in breeding animals in zoos and environmental enrichment for important taxonomic groups. The practical part is following with a research on effect of food on frequency of stereotypic behavior. The theoretical assumption says that the different time of eating the food leads to different behavior. Long-term observation was done to confirm the theory. Eight animals belonging in three species were observed in time of feeding, eight types of food were given. The behavior at the time of feeding and after was evaluated by ethogram. General trends in time used for feeding were confirmed (the shortest time for chicken and opposite the longest for head of a goat). The evaluation of stereotypic behavior mainly showed the individuality of each animal. However, servals exhibit most of this pattern. The relationship between stereotypes and time of feeding was insignificant. Generally most of the results were statistically insignificant because of low number of repetition in the dataset.
Evaluation of breeding of cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in the Czech Republic
VÁŇOVÁ, Jana
The aim of this work was to evaluate breeding of cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in the zoos of the Czech Republic according to the yearbooks of zoological gardens. Breeding of cheetah has started in the Czech Republic (zoo Praha) in 1933.. Plzeň zoo has been breeding the subspecies Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii from 2010, the other zoos do not mention subspecies. The total number of cheetahs bred in the zoos in the Czech Republic is 17 individuals to 31.12.2012. This number of individuals is also the long term average from the beginning of breeding. The highest number of cheetahs (25 individuals) was bred in the years 1972-1975. and then in the years 2004-2007, with the peak of 34 cheetahs in 2005. The lowest number of cheetahs was bred in the Czech zoos in the years 1995-1997, it was 9 cheetahs. Nowadays cheetahs have been bred in 5 zoos in the Czech Republic: Dvůr Králové, Olomouc, Ústí nad Labem, Praha and Plzeň. Number of cheetahs in private breeding in the Czech Republic consisted almost 50 % of cheetahs kept in zoos to 31.12.2012. Number of bred cheetahs in the Czech zoos creates 1 % of bred cheetahs in zoos all over the world. Breeding cheetah cubs was successful in 3 Czech zoos Dvůr Králové, Praha and Olomouc. Zoo Dvůr Králové zoo is the 7th most successful zoo in breeding of cubs in the European scale. There was born 63 cheetah cubs from the first breeding in 1988 to 2012. On the second place there is Praha zoo. Breeding of cheetah cubs began here in 1972 and it was one of the 3 zoos in the world where breeding cubs was successful at that time. In 1972-2012 there were born 53 cubs. Praha zoo is the 9th most successful zoo in breeding cubs in European scale. Olomouc zoo bred first cheetahs in 2004 and 18 cubs were born here up to 2012.
Evaluation of breeding of wolf (Canis lupus) in the C. R.
PRŮŠOVÁ, Zdenka
The aim of my study was to evaluate breeding of grey wolves (Canis lupus) in human care in the Czech Republic based on the data from the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoos (UCSZOO) Yearbooks and the data from individual zoos. After processing the data from the yearbooks since 1973 till 2012, I visited zoos´ and evaluated e. g. size of wolf-run, diet composition, chance to create a pack. The following subspecies C. l. lupus, C. l. pambasileus, C. l. occidentalis, C. l. arctos, C. l. signatus and individuals without determining the subspecies have (or were) bred in the Czech Republic. The first wolf reared in captivity in the Czech Republic was female of C. l. lupus (named Lota) in the Prague Zoo alredy in 1931. Nowadays nine zoos in the Czech Republic (two of them are not members of the UCSZOO) and three Slovak zoos (all members of the UCSZOO) breed wolves in captivity. Number of grey wolves that are bred in captivity is still growing. There were 102 grey wolves (87 within UCSZOO, 7 out of UCSZOO and 8 in private breedings) bred at the beginning of 2013. Number of grey wolves bred in evaluated zoos represented 12% and 7% of wolves bred in human care in Europa and in the world, respectively. Most of the individuals (48) were kept in the Olomouc Zoo. This zoo is simultaneously the only one which bred three subspecies of grey wolf. The most common subspecies of grey wolf kept in captivity is C. l. arctos, in the Czech Republic. Only the Olomouc Zoo and the Brno Zoo have bred this species in the Czech and Slovak Republic since 2006. There were recorded 93 grey wolves born in the UCSZOO member zoos with 74 % rearing success during the entire evaluated period (1984 2012).
Keeping and breeding of CITES reptiles in Czech Republic
TRINHOVÁ, Leona
Czech Republic considerably participated on European terraristic history with breeding of many reptiles and amphibians. This thesis covers breeding of reptiles protected on Czech Republic territory by CITES agreement. Based on mapping performed by zoological gardens, other specialized facilities and private breeders, percentage graphs were created for both reptiles not bred in Czech Republic, those bred by terrarists so far without successful reproduction and also for reptiles successfully reproduced. Aim of this thesis was to find outbreeding level of endangered reptiles within Czech Republic.Graphs with breeding success results were created for each genus. It was discovered that the best breeding results exist for reptiles reared most commonly here; turtles are bred less successfully and the least percentage of success was found with crocodiles. Probable reasons for such results were clarified too.
Vegetation inside the "Bohemian Forest" exhibition of the zoo Ohrada
FIALOVÁ, Alexandra
The first, theoretical part of my thesis is devoted to the history of zoological gardens, development of forests in the Czech Republic and forest ecosystems, simulated in the analyzed "Český les" exhibit of the Zoo Ohrada in Hluboká nad Vltavou. The exhibit is divided into sections, each representing a certain forest habitat. For each habitat I carried out a phytocenological relevé and calculated total cover, abundance and sociability values. I then compared these characteristics with the natural habitats of the zoo animals, especially in terms of their requirements and utilization. I proposed modifications aiming to increase attractiveness as well as information for visitors.

Hodnocení tohoto šetření se skládá z grafického i slovního hodnocení. V práci je dále analyzována současná propagace. Výsledkem analýz a šetření jsou návrhy na zlepšení služeb a na budoucí propagaci.
Ohrada Zoo trail - secondary school working sheets
KOLÁŘOVÁ, Marie
This thesis is aimed at the Czech ZOO´s education activities, concept of self-service worksheets for Ohrada Zoo and evaluation of these worksheets. Three tests (pre-test and two post-tests) and two groups of students were used for the evaluation. First group (experimental) passed the education activities and the tests and the second one (control group) just passed the tests. The self-service worksheets ?Our Fauna? create a practical output of the thesis. As a result of the evaluation we can say that the education activities provided in the Zoo had a pozitive and permanent influence on the students knowledge, irrespectively to their academic performance.
