The Garden as an Aesthetic Object (or as an Art?)
ŠPAKOVÁ, Eliška
This thesis addresses the issue of perception of ornamental gardens as it is discussed in works of contemporary philosophers David E. Cooper and Mara Miller. It will present the question of the garden as a specific aesthetic object, which is different from a natural aesthetic object on one side and an artwork on the other side. The thesis will also ask a question about the reasons why gardens are not considered to be in the area of art, or if and under what conditions it is currently possible to cogitate of gardens as artworks. In the final chapter, based on the previous chapters, the author will present her ideas about the origin of Czech gardens in a Japanese style. This final part deals with characteristics of Japanese gardens and compares them with the European concept of a garden.
