"The World's Biggest Problems, the World's Biggest Market Opportunities": Contours of Conscious Capitalism in the Czech Republic

This dissertation deals with the relations between economics and ethics. It specifically focuses on a contemporary trend that seeks to reform the socio-economic system from within the private sector, which the thesis conceptualises as 'conscious capitalism'. The thesis is the result of a long-term ethnographic research on socially responsible start-ups in Prague and presents conscious capitalism through three case studies. The first study focuses on the question of work ethic and subjectivity of conscious entrepreneurs and workers and the dynamics of their interrelationship in enterprises. The second study shifts the focus to the sphere of socially beneficial production and the creation of conscious products, and analyses in detail the operation of one social enterprise. The theme of the third case study is the relation of conscious capitalism to shareholder capitalism, which it on the one hand criticizes, but on the other hand builds on and uses for its own development. This dissertation belongs to the critical social science studies that address the ethical turn in capitalism (Bandinelli 2017; Chiapello 2013; Land & Taylor 2014; Morozov 2013), although its own contribution stems primarily from the research focus on the inside of the small start- ups. Poverty, Pauperism and Social Question as Public Discourses in the Habsbburg Monarchy in the Era "Vormärz" and Revolution of 1848/1849

(in English): This paper deals with early views on industrial pauperism in texts intended for a public reading in the western part of the Habsburg monarchy during the pre-March period (here 1830-1848) and at the time of the revolution in 1848-1849. The main observed phenomenon is the dynamics of social and political imagination of the Austrian society in a relation to structural processes of European modernization. On two basic areas, journalism and literature, it explores development of views on the mass poverty from the general romantic rejection of modernization process to the proposals for solutions of the social question, which were formulated on the basis of affiliation to any political camp, for example, education by liberalism or the welfare state by socialism. The work does not deal so much with a thinking of big personalities of social theory, but rather focuses on the everyday negotiations dichotomy of "old" and "new", which was led by nowadays more or less forgotten authors.

Consumerism and Identity Construction of Contemporary Inhabitants of the Czech Republic

The main issue of this thesis is the influence of consumerism on construction of identity and values of contemporary inhabitants of the Czech Republic. In the first part of the thesis I give an explanation of characteristics typical for the ?producer society? and the ?consumer society? and importance of work ethic in these types of societies as explained by the theory of Prof. Zygmunt Bauman in his book Work, Consumerism and the New Poor. Next I try to explain the influence of work and consumerism on the creation of identity. Next I focus on changes and development of consumerism and the meaning of work for the Czech people and their identity since planned economy until the present days. Finally I try to answer the question if the Czech Republic is more alike the Bauman?s ?producer society? or the ?consumer society?.
