Elemental composition analysis of inorganic materials

This work deals with elemental analysis of inorganic materials, that are presented by blast furnace slag and geopolymeric material containing fly-ashes. In the theoretical part there are explained principles of elemental analysis of inorganic materials. Ways of dissolution of samples, optical emission spectroscopy and electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis are commented. In experimental part the ICP analysis of oxide standards is described. The standards were used for estimation of EDS-correction factors. Then follow the preparation, proving and use of standards in analysis of blast furnace slag. The work is finished by exact analysis of concentration profiles of elements in interface of phases in geopolymeric material.

High-performance concretes based on the secondary raw materials

This work is devoted to study of physical-mechanical properties and structure of high performance concretes (HPC) based on portland cement. The attention is focused on possibility of substitution of economic high-cost components of concrete with utilization of secondary raw materials or cheaper components. Properties of raw materials and their influence on whole quality of concrete were tracked by various methods. Mechanical properties of prepared HPC samples were tested especially (compression and flexural strength) with further microscopic study of structure. Isoperibolic calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction method were also used for concrete characterisation. These methods allowed to determine the influence of raw materials on prepared HPC and to carry out a certain optimization among price and quality of this material.
Setting control of alkali-activated systems

This thesis is focused on the possibilities of setting control of alkali-activated systems based on blast furnace slag. The aim of this work is finding the suitable retarder that most extends the time of setting and also preserves the mechanical properties of alkali-activated material. In experimental section were prepared samples of blast furnace slag, water glass, water and additives in various weight addition. Testing samples have undergone of flexural and compressive strength tests. Then the setting time was determined using the Vicat device. The samples were measured calorimetrically because of monitoring the setting process. Finally the mixtures were observed using scanning electron microscope for a closer view on the structure of samples and distribution of setting retarder.
Comparision of leachability of heavy metals from various types of alkali-activated alumino-silicate systems

The work deals with the determination and comparison of leaching of heavy metals from various types of alkali-activated alumino-silicate systems (high-temperature fly ash, blast furnace slag). Such alkali activated materials are capable in their structure effectively encapsulate heavy metals, toxic chemicals or other contaminants, which can be beneficial for the environment. The aim of this work is to obtain a mixture with acceptable mechanical properties that could be useful for the inhibition of these substances. Leachability was tested according to norm ČSN EN - 12457-4, followed by analysis by ICP-OES. The structure of the matrix was investigated using SEM equipped with EDS.
Reduction of efflorescence in the geopolymer systems

Alkali metal cations are weakly bound in the structure of alkali activated materials. This fact causes the formation of undesirable efflorescence in humid environment. In this work, the effect of fluoride additives, which significantly reduce the efflorescence, was investigated. The chemical mechanism of selected additive in the modified binder was studied based on XRD, SEM EDX and ICP OES analysis. Also the effect of the added fluorides on the mechanical properties of the final product was monitored.
Study of the influence of compositon on the mechanical properties of high performance concrete

This work is devoted to study the influence of the composition on mechanical properties of high performance concret based on portland cement. 29 samples of high performance concrete (HPC) warying in composition were prepared. The constituents used for HPC preparation were: cement Aalborg White, silica fume, finelly ground blast furnace slag, finelly ground silica, calcinated bauxite and polycarboxylate based superplasticizer. The mechanical parameters (flexural and compressive strength) of the samples were observed after 7 and 28 days of moist curing. Compressive strength values after 28 days were in the range of 92 to 194 MPa and the flexural strength values were in the range of 7 to 23 MPa (without using of fiber reinforcement). The graphs showing mechanical parameters depending on the mixture composition were constructed and consequently evaluated.
Preparation and characterization of concretes based on blended geopolymeric binder

This bachelor thesis focuses on preparation of concretes based on alkali activated binding systems (geopolymers). Finely ground blast-furnace slag was used as a basic aluminosilicate compound for preparation of an alkali activated binder. A mixture of sodium water glass and 50 % KOH solution, which was replaced by cement kiln dust in some cases, was used as an activator. The prepared testing samples (columns 40x40x160 mm) were mechanically tested for strength and the influence of the substitution of KOH solution by cement kiln dust on strength was observed. Then the work aims at structure analysis of binders prepared – the thermal analysis was carried out and the phase composition was explored with RTG diffraction.
Preparation of light composites on the basis of alkali activated fly ashes from high temperature combustion of coal

This thesis studies possibilities of preparation light composite materials based on solid residues from high-temperature burning. The main focus is put on potential alkaline activation by water glass and 50% sodium hydroxide solution. Further on, the thesis analyzes suitable additions which when added into alkaline environment with alkali release gas and thus enable to create light porous composites. The aim of this work is to suggest one or several recipes for preparation of light composites made from solid residues from high-temperature burning through alkaline activation. To method of XRD diffraction analysis has been used to identify the products of hydration and alkaline-siliceous reaction (phases) of alkaline activation.
Potential replacement of blast furnace slag in mixed Portland cements

This thesis deals with the possibilities of substitution of blast furnace slag in production of blended portland cements. Attention is focused on secondary raw materials, especially fine fractions from production of crushed aggregates, whereas their impact on the properties of final blended binder is assessed.
