The Life Story Of A Person With Visual Impairment And His Family
KOTKOVÁ, Markéta
The present thesis deals with the subjective perception of one's own life situation and life story of an adult with visual impairment and cerebral palsy. Person is perceived in the context of his entire family, and so the accounts of other family members are also integral. The aim of this thesis is to detail the life of an adult individual through the eyes of several generations of his family. The sub-questions are a closer specification of the main research question. To achieve the aim, narrative interviews were analysed with the individual with a disability himself, his parents, grandmother, sister and niece. The narrative interviews allowed us to capture in more detail the subjective experiences of each family member. In the theoretical part, the visual impairment and cerebral palsy are briefly described. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the specifics resulting from visual impairment in relation to the individual's personality. Another important chapter is the family with a child with a disability, which undoubtedly has a great influence on the individual. The loneliness that accompanies a person with a disability is an integral part of the overall conception of the question we have set out. Disability is part of society. Previously, or rather before 1989, this was not the case. It was not very common to meet individuals with any disability. For today's society, this fact may seem somewhat unimaginable. The thesis gives an insight into a time when the possibilities, approaches and overall view of a family with an individual with a disability were from the very beginning completely different than they are today. The results of the research investigation point to the influence of the lack of support at that time, which may have had some impact not only on the individual but also on the family's present. The data collected for this thesis can be used as teaching material for degree programs that prepare students for their future helping profession. Furthermore, they can be beneficial to families who are in similar situations.
