Using some aspects of suggestopedia in English language classes at lower secondary school level

This thesis implements aspects of suggestopedia in English language classes for lower secondary school level. The theoretical part of this thesis provides information on current traditional and alternative methods on foreign language teaching. The thesis also contains a detailed description of suggestopedia. An additional objective represents music theory and its various uses during teaching. This thesis aims to prove that some aspects of suggestopedia are highly adaptable when teaching pupils English as a foreign language. In order to achive this goal, three lessons are created with their curriculum according to the Framework Education Programme and School Education Programme for secondary schooling. This thesis offers a detailed description of three English language lessons and teaching material that is included in the appendix. Evaluating the suggestopedia adapted lessons comprises of a group interview and a short questionnaire. The final conclusion of the thesis is based on feedback provided by pupils and the teacher's self-reflection.
Motivation of Secondary School Learners to Study English

This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of motivation to learn a foreign language, especially focusing on the English language and the motivation of secondary school learners. The first chapters define the term motivation and its basic division and theories are introduced. Further on, the thesis describes motivational factors in learning a foreign language as well as in teaching it in a school environment. Additionally, the motivational role of a teacher is examined. The last part of the thesis is devoted to the specifics of the English language and secondary school learners. The aim of the analytical part is to evaluate the motivation of secondary school learners for studying the English language and to find out how significant a teacher's influence in this process is. For this purpose, a qualitative survey of twenty-three final year secondary school learners was used. Its results are processed in through the analytical part of this thesis. Its results were then processed throughout the analytical part of this thesis, too.
Teaching English with Classical Music

This diploma thesis deals with using songs in English language teaching at lower secondary schools. The thesis comprises of two parts a theoretical and practical section. In the theoretical part I define the term music and its four basic elements. The teaching methodologies and song activities are also included in this part. The influence of classical music on students and its advantages and disadvantages are associated with the learning of English language. Based on these theoretical findings I prepared nine lesson plans with activities focussing on grammatical structures, vocabulary or comprehension of the lesson topic. The composer's biography and some brief information are outlined in the beginning of every chapter. Subsequently the suggested lesson plans exploit the lyrics of the classical music which develop the linguistics skills and enhance the interest of the children.
Games in English Language Teaching at Primary School

The diploma thesis deals with the importance of the didactic play in teaching and its use in English language lessons. The theoretical part defines the didactic games, characterize its meaning from the point of view of pedagogig and psychologig. It acquaints with the developmental stages of pupils in their first level of primary school and also provides a basic segmentation of games according to various aspects of involvement in teaching. The practical part is devoted to the analysis of five lessons in different classes. It deals with questions related to the objectives of teaching, practical use of games and then it defines a basic overview of the most used games in teaching¨. The end of the work offers a general overview of the information obtained in both , theoretical and practical parts, and also presents my own reflections.
The development of methods in foreign language teaching from the mid 19th century until present

This diploma thesis scrutinizes development of foreign language teaching methods as well as their conceptions and usage. The aim of this thesis is to provide a complex insight into the issue. The thesis works with a few hypotheses such as influence of age (of pupils as well as teachers) on choice of methods. Even more attention is dedicated to eclecticism and communicative methods which are believed to be predominant in today's teaching. The theoretical part is focused on explanation and clarification of methodologic terminology, all the methods and didactic approaches existing in foreign language teaching, which are presented chronologically. There are also influential psychological and linguistic movements important for development of the methods summarized. Then the research based on survey for teachers follows. This part explores which techniques, typical for particular methods, prevail in contemporary teaching. The aim of the research is to find out which methods and techniques are chosen by teachers and what factors influence their choice. The practical part functions as a sort of evidentiary test. The dissertation deals with foreign language teaching methods at the Primary School in the Czech, English and German environment. It includes the summary of the present basic knowledge about the foreign language teaching methods generally both in the Czech, English and German environment. Subsequently there has been presented and analysed the real use of foreign language teaching methods at the Czech Primary School at present. In conclusion there has been drawn further suggestion for a possible appropriate future development of the foreign language teaching methods at the Czech Primary School based on the research too.
Pronounciation mistakes of Czech students learning Portuguese

The presented Master's thesis entitled "Pronounciation mistakes of Czech students learning Portuguese" tries to depict the most common mistakes in the pronounciation of Portuguese sounds by Czech students. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part, based on a careful research of specialized materials, deals with phonetics, the phonological aspect of a language, phonology, the description of speech forming processes, sound systems of Portuguese, rules for correct pronounciation of respective sounds and also interference - the influences of a person's mother tongue while learning Portuguese. The theoretical part served as a basis for the practical part. In the practical part an analysis was carried out, using a number of audio recordings taken from first-year to fifth-year students of Portuguese Studies at Charles University, Faculty of Arts. The aim of this analysis was to detect typical mistakes made by Czech Students in the pronounciation of Portuguese sounds. The observed pronounciation phenomena are recorded in tables, each phenomena separately. In conclusion, the thesis provides an evaluation of the analysis.
Use of Audiovisual Teaching Aids in the Teaching of French Language

The thesis is about the use of audiovisual aids in French language lessons. The aim of the thesis is to discuss the availability and diversity of audiovisual documents accessible online. The thesis defines and characterises specific concepts of audiovisual education and the use of audiovisual aids for activities related to listening comprehension. Lastly, the thesis presents less conventional forms of audiovisual education and online sources which can be used during French language lessons. This thesis deals with the issue of using songs in English language teaching at lower secondary schools. The thesis comprises of two parts a theoretical one and a practical one. In the theoretical part, I mostly describe and explain the basic terms used, such as song, music and rhythm. The teaching methodology and song activities that can be used in English lessons are also included in this part. Further, I also deal with the influence of music on students and the atmosphere in the classroom in connection with music. Based on these findings, I prepared four English lesson plans in accordance with Educational Framework and school curriculum. These lessons also correspond to the topics or grammatical structures that the students currently deal with in their lessons. The main focus is placed on the skills and subskills that are developed by the particular activities. All these lessons were put into practise at lower secondary school level. Subsequently, I also give feedback on these lessons. Another part of this thesis consists of an analysis of English textbooks with respect to the usage of songs and song activities in lessons. For this purpose, four volumes of the textbook Project Third Edition were chosen. These textbooks were analysed from the point of view of the main educational aims and types of activities, mostly with respect to the skills and subskills practised via these songs.
Cooperative learning in the teaching of foreign language

This work is focused on cooperative learning in foreign language teaching. It brings knowledge about cooperative learning, about methods of didactics in foreign language and their suitability for using cooperative learning. It deals with the news that appeared in cooperative learning in a foreign language teaching. The research that is part of this work was qualitative and it was completed by quantitative research, too. The aim of the research was to understand the teachers' point of view and their opinion on cooperative learning in foreign language teaching. The outcome is finding teachers' attitude to cooperative learning in foreign language teaching and their attitude to including this kind of teaching in real teaching.
