The Cross in Changing of Times and its Significance in Ancient Society
Roule, Radek ; Lášek, Jan Blahoslav (advisor) ; Weis, Martin (referee) ; Royt, Jan (referee)
The Cross in Changing of Times and its Significance in Ancient Society The cross is the most widespread symbol appearing worldwide right from the prehistoric times. Though being formed of a very simple shape of two intersecting lines the significance is far reaching. This dissertation looks at the cross both as a sign pointing beyond itself and concentrates on the diversity of its visual appearance. It tries to trace back the possible factors preceding Antiquity influencing the formation of the actual shape in that particular period of history. Although for most part the cross is understood in its connection with the Crucifixion of Christ its history is far more complex beginning in pre-Christian era. The biblical texts present more or less mere allusions of the cross itself. Seen typologically the cross may be understood as the element connecting both Old and New Testament creating a sort of a bridge between them. The careful analysis of the Early Christian documents brings several terms used for the same reality. The most significant are - σταυρός with the Latin equivalent crux and ξύλου (wood) with the Latin equivalent lignum. Later on these give a way to a more general term of σημεῖον (sign) and finally to a symbolic expression "σύμβολον σωτηρίας" (sign-symbol of salvation). The early Christian writers...

Dílo Johanna Sebastiana Bacha v sémiotické perspektivě
JAROLÍMOVÁ, Jana
This dissertation deals with the semiotic potential of J.S. Bach's work. The topic follows on from the diploma thesis Music as a sign and the author's pedagogical musical practice. The first part of the thesis is focused on the semiotic nature of the musical piece and its communication function with reference to the semiotic art theory of Josef Zverina. It is focused on the characteristics of the artistic sign, the sign functions, and above all to the subjects appearing in semiotic musical communication: the creator, the perceiver, and the performer. The aim of the first part is to characterize key semiotic musical concepts for the next parts of the thesis and also to evaluate the contribution of Zverina's concept to musical semiotics. The second part of the thesis is focused on the most used semiotic triad of icons - index - symbol in the concept of Ch. S. Peirce. As part of the iconicity of the musical sign, attention is paid to musical notation and its semiotic marking. In the music index, a large space is devoted to affect theory and the semiotic insight of musical emotions. The musical symbol is clarified in Bach's theological utterance and the analysis of symbolically rich places in his pieces. The aim of the second part is to link Peirce's sign triad with specific musical examples and to find out how these types of signs function in the musical discourse. The third part of the thesis is focused on the claim that Bach's musical artwork can be related to Leibniz's monadology. The goal is to clarify what analogies and differences result from this interdependence. The conclusion of the thesis contains an overlap into the current problems of artificial intelligence, which influences musical semiotics, as well as a summary of the contribution of this thesis.

Ape Boards is my own newly formed label, which manufactures snowboards and kiteboards. For this thing I have proposed a substantial logotype, which has a function as a unifying element across the whole brand and designs boards. Website (www.apeboards.com). A first collection of snowboards and kiteboards from which I had made 7 pieces for a thesis. Designs do not 'mass' lust, because the objective is not a big production or promotion, but based on what I liked. From the minimalism through the color geometry to the gorillas, according to which the brand was named.
