Definitions of Art
Mikešová, Marcela ; Kulka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kubalík, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis deals with George Dickie's institutional theory (IT) of art. Dickie provides a definition of art which relates art to cultural, social and historical conditions. His definition is based on realizing the contextual framework of so-called Artworld. The thesis maps the intellectual background of Dickie's theory, analyzes its form, and provides a critical reflection of its shortcomings. In the first part we introduce several authors, whose work forms the theoretical background for the Dickie's theory, including anti-essencialism. We will outline the basic principles of the IT and, finally, we will point out the major problematic issues of his relational theory of art. Keywords artworld, institutional analysis, conferring status, candidate for appreciation
Arthur C. Danto and the Idea of the End of Art
FILIPOV, Jakub
An American philosopher and aesthetician Arthur C. Danto and his theory of art are emphasized in this bachelor thesis. The crucial issues of the thesis are the clarification of Danto's term "Artworld" and the seeking of both the roots and the explanatory power of theory that proclaims end of art to that a brief look into the philosophy of G. W. F. Hegel and the writing Arthur Danto's The End of Art itself will be used. In the end of the work, this proposion will be analysed according to alternative perspectives of the philosophers Noël Carroll and Michael Kelly, in which case we hint at the question what this idea of the end of art means for the current art scene.

The Concept of the End of Art History and the Theory of Arthur C. Danto
Drexlerová, Eva ; Rakušanová, Marie (advisor) ; Konečný, Lubomír (referee)
The aim of this essay is to give a critical examination of Arthur C. Danto's art theory. In order to present a comprehensive exploration, the thesis deals with both Danto's philosophy of art and philosophy of the history of art. Within this discourse it aspires to evaluate Danto's end of art thesis and its appropriateness. In the first part, Danto's idea of the artworld, that is his contextual and historical theory of art, is examined. This includes the exploration of historical circumstances within which his art definition was developed, the notion of his essentialist and historic approach, and main features of his well-known technique of comparing indiscernible counterparts. The second part is devoted to Danto's philosophy of the history of art, especially to his Hegelian turn and what of such shift further stems. The third part explores the end of art thesis itself and, as its consequence, the posthistorical condition of art. The final part consists of two sections that attemp to critically evaluate both Danto's art definition and his end of art thesis. Finally, some arguments why Danto's theory about the end of art might be considered as inconclusive and speculative are conferred.
