Approaches by the government and non-profit sector to provide education to the Roma in eastern Slovakia

The subject of this thesis is to describe the approach of the state and the non-profit sector to education of Romani children in Eastern Slovakia. The theoretical part is focused on the approach of state, from pre-school through elementary school. The second chapter is devoted to the concept of social disadvantages and definitions of children coming from this type of environment. It clarifies known concepts such as zero class, preparatory class, teacher assistant and a full-day educational system, related to primary education and pupils from socially disadvantaged environment. The practical part is specifically dedicated to a single non-profit organization working in eastern Slovakia, ETP Slovakia - Center for Sustainable Development, with a description of the organization and their projects. Qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured interviews. The aim of this thesis is to describe the activities of five staff members of the NGO ETP Slovakia, their preferred styles of work with children and to find out if they themselves see the benefits of non-profit organizations within the village Velka Ida. The Role of Non-profit Organizations in Educational Support of Socially Disadvantaged Roma Students

The topic of this thesis is the role of non-profit organizations in supporting the education of socially disadvantaged Roma students. The thesis provides the analysis of the involvement of non-profit organizations in the process education support. The theoretical part of the thesis defines essential concepts in the area of education of socially disadvantaged students including support strategies with the emphasis on Roma students. The thesis provides an overview of the impact of social disadvantage on the education process, the affirmative processes utilized in school environment and the available support from the non-profit organizations. The research part of the thesis analyzes the data obtained through interviews with the employees of four selected non-profit organizations providing the support in the education of socially disadvantaged Roma students. The interviews are focused on identification of main forms of education support provided by non-profit organizations, their benefits in the education process of a socially disadvantaged student and the limits and opportunities presented in this process by the cooperation of non-profit organizations and schools.
