Research on Strategies Students Use when Solving Problem Tasks

The subject of this thesis is the identification of strategies, which are used by lower-secondary school students when solving problem tasks in chemistry. The strategies were identified during talks with ninth-grade students. The talks conducted by using the Think-aloud method were connected with solution of selected problem tasks. The ascertained strategies were classified as expansive strategies (such strategy can be used to solve more types of problems) and limiting strategies (such strategy can be used to solve easy task, but they can fail when solving more difficult tasks). Furthermore, reader's strategies, which help students to understand the tasks were separately identified. Also, other problems that students had to face when solving the tasks were identified. To identify problematic elements a collection of problem tasks named Metodické komentáře a úlohy ke standardům pro základní vzdělávání - chemie (Methodical comments and tasks for educational standards for elementary education - chemistry) were used. The results showed that when students solved the tasks, which were larger and more difficult, they often used reading strategies, which consist in multiple reading and reading aloud. In the thesis, results of a research focused on monitoring strategies used by students during problem solving are presented. It follows previous studies conducted with the use of think- aloud method. Due to limitations of this method, an eye-camera is used. The record of the camera is used not only to analyse student's problem-solving process, but also as a tool eliminating one of the RTA limits - inaccuracies due to forgetting. The strategies were investigated among economics-oriented vocational school students in the first grade. They solved indicator tasks from the Methodical Comments and Tasks for Educational Standards in Lower-Secondary Education. The research sample was selected based on a pre-test composed of the selected tasks. According to the results, the students were divided into four categories, two students of each category were selected for the research. They solved a second set of the tasks. Based on eye-tracking and think-aloud data, their problem- solving processes were mapped and false-positive results were eliminated. The research results show that the students used the most expansive strategies, mainly work with the periodical table. This Master's thesis discusses the Problem - based learning as one of the constructive teaching concept methods, it's position in the system of teaching methods and the possible uses in primary school regard to the key competencies of solving the problems. This theme is very actual because of the influence in the real life. The objectives of the Master's thesis is to define the basic concept of the Problem-based learning (problem, problematic situations, types of the problematic tasks and the way of their solving), key competencies and appropriate organizational forms of the teaching. The objective of the practical level is to define the principles of the effective use of this method in teaching, to verify the possibilities of uses of the Problem-based learning and focus on the way of fulfilling of the key competencies of solving the problems using various organizational forms of teaching. Problem solving method in mathematics teaching

This master's thesis deals with unusual applications tasks and problem tasks in teaching mathematics at the upper primary school as well as with their solving strategies. The whole work is build around an analysis of pupils' solutions of selected problem tasks. It was found that solving the tasks caused considerable troubles to a significant part of the pupils. The final part of the thesis contains a collection of problem tasks along with their solutions that is focused on teaching heuristic problem solving strategies and based on the analysis results.
Model of creating motivational items for use in non-chemical vocational schools

TITLE: Model of creating motivational items for use in non-chemical vocational schools SUMMARY: Presently, there have been significant reforms in the field of education in progress in the Czech Republic. Among others, formerly valid educational standards are being replaced by new standards - Framework Educational Programmes. They have also become effective for secondary schools since 1st September 2009. One of the changes is an addition of science based subjects (thus also chemistry) to all the framework educational programmes for every field of study in vocational schools. Hence, the number of pupils who will be taught science has grown comparing to the previous years. As it was confirmed by an inquiry made for the purposes of this thesis, the above mentioned group of pupils represents the majority among pupils in secondary schools. It was important to analyze the learning environment at non-chemical vocational schools, in order to support as effective utilization of learning units assigned for this schools as possible. Collection of problems for school mathematics

The main content of this bachelor thesis is to make research of internet portals and textbooks that offers problem tasks from mathematics and to create a collection of problem tasks for lower secondary school. Tasks in the collection from mathematics are categorized to four chapters according to the class for which they are determined. Every task contains one or more solutions and is accompanied by picture.
