The Use of Fairy tales and the Development of Pre-literacy Through the Eyes of Parents

This Bachelor Thesis deals with the use of fairy tales and the development of pre-literacy by parents of preschool children. The thesis is dividend into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part focuses on fairy tales, their origin, characteristic features and their influence on children's development. It also focuses on pre-literacy and its developmnet in children of preschool age. In the practical part, answers to research questions will be sought in the form of questionnaire for parents of preschool children. The goal is to find out how and how often parents of preschool children use fairy tales at home. Furthermore, the goal is to determine whether parents only use fairy tales passively or actively, and to investigate whether parents are aware of the influence of literature on children's development. Then, based on the answers obtained, create methodical material - a manual with suggested activities that parents could apply to (almost) any fairy tale and which supports better use of fairy tales in a family environment. With the help of this supportive material, parents would be able to work with fairy tales better and more efficiently, and thus would specifically support the development of pre- literacy in their children. Pre-school preparation for literacy development

In my bachelor's thesis I deal with the development of pre-literacy in a public kindergarten and in a preschool facility of the Montessori type. The theoretical part serves as an introduction to the topic. There is an approach to the current concept of preschool education, the characteristics of public kindergartens and Montessori kindergartens. The preschool age and development of the child in the areas of gross motor skills, fine motor skills and graphomotor skills are outlined. I followed the current trends of school readiness, maturity and dealt with the development of pre-literacy, where I mentioned goals and methods. The aim of the practical part is to find out how to choose selected kindergartens, to participate in the development in the areas of gross motor skills, fine motor skills and graphomotor skills on the basis of the class educational program. Observation and analysis of documents were involved in research methods. The research shows that selected kindergartens prepare children for the development of literacy sufficiently according to the classroom educational program. Children are well prepared to enter primary school. The development is compatible with the classroom educational program. Kindergartens develop children in these areas in different ways. North American public libraries programmes focusing on developement of children's reading skills from birth to 6 years: case studies

The aim of this diploma thesis is characterization and evaluation of programs and projects, which are proceeding in United States of America to support children's reading skills. The first part is devoted to reading to children from birth to six years, impact of books to children, and to factors, which are influencing the beginning of reading. In other chapters are presented projects of American Library Association and its division Association for Library Services to Children. In the following, the programs of selected libraries and non-profit organization are mentioned (for example Mother Goose on the Loose, Birth to six or Reach out and Read). In the last part is described the situation in Czech Republic. There are presented projects like Celé Česko čte dětem, Rosteme s knihou, Poprvé do školy - Poprvé do knihovny, and also cooperation of libraries and kindergartens.
