"Vítání občánků": Social Analysis of a Czech Baby-Welcoming Ceremony

Vítání občánků which translates to "Welcoming of Little Citizens" is a rite of passage celebrated by Czech parents with newborns at their local town or city council. It was invented during the Communist era with the aim of replacing baptism. A reason for its continued popularity even after the shift to democracy is its function as a rite of passage at a difficult life situation but also its successful re-invention. Transition to parenthood is difficult in contemporary society due to high societal expectations of parents as well as contradictory ideals. Rite of passage helps ease the transition for the parents, but it also involves the broader community and the newborn. In addition, it puts one's life journey into a bigger perspective and provides a platform for a family gathering and for using symbolic language. Both its invention and re-invention were done by inducing a sense of continuity via elements invoking past traditions and universal values. Thanks to that, the desired new meanings and values have been accepted by the public. A crucial role in the (re)inventing process has been played by a so-called institutional entrepreneur, an actor who has the skills, resources and motivation to achieve it. Baptism as Rite of passage

The bachelor's thesis deals with baptism as a rite of passage. The theoretical part is divided into two main sections. The first section defines the ritual, its functions and species. It also characterizes a rite of passage and initiation rites. The second section deals with baptism. The thesis defines themeaning of baptism, its history, traditions, and brings the current form of baptism for children and the current form of baptism for adults. It describes in more detail why baptism belongs to the rites of passage. The practical part is based on research. It contains nine interviews with the respondents. The main goal of the research is to find out whether people consider baptism as a rite of passage, or whether they see baptism as a ceremony associated with the marginal life situation of the birth of a child.
The sacraments as life milestones

This bachelors's thesis deals with the significance of sacraments as milestones in human's life. It describes the birth and beginning of life, including the Christian life as well as the development of baptism from times when this phenomenon was connected only with adults to today when mostly children are being baptized. This is followed by a chapter on the significance of ritualization life milestones in present days. The last chapter presents conducted research attempting to answer the question: "What leads people in a secularized society to demand the accompaniment of the church in the rituals associated with Christian life?"
Absence of Rites of passage in liminal situations

This dissertation seeks to evaluate the absence of rites of passage in the context of indi-viduals´ marginal life situations. The aim of this research is to describe rites of passage and to highlight its importance in the contemporary age. Furthermore, it proposes an implementation of rites of passage in the area of social work due to its potential to aid in dealing with difficult life situations. For example, it can be used as a tool in group the-rapy for people with substance use disorder diagnosis, in social work with terminally ill patients or the bereaved dealing with grief. In addition to that, it is also a useful tool for the work woth adolescents going through multiple life changes. Conclusively, this dis-sertation proposes the rite of passage as a valuable tool for social work with many groups of people, and also seeks to encourage other social areas and individuals to im-plement rite of passage in their daily life.
Rites of passage as a theme in the history textbooks

The intention of the Diploma thesis Rites of passage as a theme in the history textbooks is analyze the history textbooks of upper primary school in terms of rites of passage. This practical part is preceded by general introduction to the issue of rituals and rites of passage. The following is a discussion of selected rites of passage, which are weddings and funerals. Selected rites of passage determine the direction which is going analysis itself textbooks. In general I am interested in themes of weddings, funerals and all other facts that are associated with the issue in analyzing textbooks. Then I find out, how and what extent selected rites of passage are presented to pupils. So that pupils gain the most information from the particular way in view of the rites of passage, I deal also possibilities to enrich a certain representation of ritual. The conclusion summarizes the main reasons for the changes of rites of passage that appear in the history books for upper primary school.
