Using school garden to teach biology in ZŠ Hostýnská school

The thesis aims on complex description of environmental features of ZŠ Hostýnská school ground and evaluating its using for teaching biology. In theoretic part the importance of school grounds for educating is introduced, history of school gardens and current state of their using is described. Next part is focused on current using of school ground and description of its environment. Floristic investigation made by author in 2014-2015 is included. In frequent visits author found and determinated 117 species of vascular plants, which is a sign of relatively high biodiversity. Finally using of school ground is compared with school book and key competences. Plans and suggestions for future improvements are given. Five work sheets with methodic suggestions are included.

This diploma thesis searches opportunities for foundations and inovations of schoolyards, which improve their education potencial. It draws on arguments for achieving the goals of primary education at schoolyards. Presented options are kategorized to three groupes by their primary function: to learn, to play, to work. This research deals with current stage of education potencial of schoolyards at chosen ordinary schools in Rakovník, Louny and Kladno districts. It focuses on schoolyards area and main ways of improving the education potencial of schoolyards. The second part of research finds answers on the same questions at schools which their schoolyards for outdoor learning some years actively construct.

The diploma thesis deals with the creation of educative gardens in educational institutions. Speficially, the author focuses on school gardens at elementary schools. She examines their historical development, current trends and the legislative framework, and explores the possibilities of implementing Framework Educational Programme for elementary education in school gardens through educative elements. An important part of the work is the analysis of the alternative as well as the conventional educational approaches to school gardens based on a detailed analysis of selected institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad. The author focuses mainly on the process of design, realization and maintenance of such gardens, their current use for educational purposes, and the elements that form part of these gardens. The author confronts the obtained information with available literature and knowledge in this field. She concludes her thesis by defining theoretical starting points for creation of school gardens at elementary schools. These are subsequently applied to an architectural study of a selected model area of the alternative elementary school ScioŠkola in Brno.

In the theoretic part, the work gives the leader a view into the literáty overview within the field of elementary-school gardens, thein history and contemporary legislative framework which influences thein today´s look. The focus is on continuously more and more popular tendencies aiming on the human-nature relationship and an extension of such a relation into ecology, physiology, psychology, sociology and didactics. The work hints advantages of outdoor education and school activities, it shows us possibilities of founding an outdoor classroom and offers the reader an insight of already existing examples in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. In the practical part, the author offers solution of realization of a school garden in a chosen area; furthermore it incorporates principles of a naturalistic garden. The design of the chosen project is based on the author´s experience as well as data collected from the school pupils. The concept is extended by thematic level stimulating fantasy of child volunteers.

This diploma thesis deals with a utilization of school gardens for education at primary schools. It draws on historical development of school gardens and tries to emphasize an importance of their incorporation into an educational process, their positive impact on health and growth of pupils, and improvement of their skills and knowledge. Thesis also analyses relationships with Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. Research itself deals with current state and utilization of school gardens by primary school teachers at Kolin district. It focuses on a school garden ownership, frequency of their usage, personal experience and needs of teachers for giving lectures in gardens. It also discusses areas of education for which the gardens are mostly used.
