Victim blaming in public discussions: A case study of comments under news articles about cases involving sexual violence

Diploma thesis focuses on victim blaming and using rape myths in public discuissions of the news articles. Specifically it is focused on discussions of online media Seznam zprávy, Novinky and iDnes. In the theoretical part it represents the issue of sexual violence, victim blaming theories and the behavior of internet usersin discussions. Further it focuses on three specific cases related to sexual violence - cases of Dominik Feri, Jan Cimický and statement of the police chief Martin Vondrášek about fake rapes. Research part of diplomat theses examines a total of 4 890 comments from public discussions of the news media. Research maps the level of victim blaming and using rape myths. In each of the cases it takes into account specific aspects of a particular case. The results show, that the level of victim blaming in discussions is almost 36 percent. Rape myths are using by 38 percent of users. It follows further from the research, that debaters often downplay sexual violence. Semiotic analysis is devoted to sepcific myths used in discussions. In addition to rape myths, it also refer about other users assumptions, that have come up in the discussions. Secondary Victimization and Victim Blaming in the Media: A Case Study of the Dominik Feri Scandal

This bachelor thesis deals with media coverage of the Dominik Feri case in connection with secondary victimization and victim blaming. This case involves Dominik Feri, a former MP of the Czech Republic, who was publicly accused of sexual violence by several independent witnesses in 2021. This thesis consists of a theoretical part, which includes a definition of related terms and an introduction to the case, including its wider social context. The practical part is a qualitative content analysis that addresses whether the media in reporting this case has somehow wronged the victims and caused secondary victimization as a result. This will be pursued using a few selected search codes in selected articles of the media originating from key moments in the case between 2021 and 2024. Media and its impact on secondary victimization and victim blaming of the victims of sexual violence and harassment

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the news media and the way they cover the acts of sexual violence and harassment and its victims. The aim is to describe how Czech media contribute to the secondary victimization of the victims and to so-called victim blaming, which is an accusation that the victim is to blame for the act committed. The theoretical part explains the context and concepts related to crime victims, which are important for understanding the practical part. It defines sexual violence, explains the term victimization and the types of victimization, as well as the phenomenon of victim blaming and rape culture, whose existence is often supported by the news media. The thesis is also devoted to media framing and journalistic ethics regarding the coverage of crimes and crime victims. In the practical part, the thesis explores articles published from January to April 2022 in selected Czech online media - both serious and tabloid - in which the media refer to the victims of sexual violence and harassment. It observes how the media informed the public about the victims and how it contributed to the secondary victimization and victim blaming by using certain controversial words and phrases.
