History or Fiction? The Question of Hybrid Literature: Laurent Binet's Novel HHhH
Soukup, Jan ; Ébert-Zeminová, Catherine (advisor) ; Fučíková, Milena (referee)
The diploma thesis concerns the questions of hybrid literature, especially the novel HHhH by Laurent Binet. Even though history and fiction can impact and enrich each other, their relationship is quite problematic. Therefore philosophers, historians and literary critics are trying to answer the questions of how to write (about) history. Laurent Binet tackles this in his novel HHhH, in which two storylines keep alternating. In the first one narrator constantly addresses the reader, expressing his doubts if it is even possible to give a faithful account of an historical event. In the second storyline he portrays the events that led to the assassination of deputy Reich Protector of the Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich. The goal of the thesis is to analyse the relationship between history and fiction, as this relationship has during the 20th century undergone rapid changes, which are also apparent in the analysed text. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first, which serves as a theoretical base for the subsequent analysis of HHhH, depicts the historiographical approaches, which have changed and evolved significantly in the 20th century. The second part tracks the reflections of the particular historiographical approaches in HHhH and examines, which conclusions has the author reached in his...
Comparison of Short Stories by F. Langer, M. V. Kratochvíl and M. Součková - Variations of Genre
Kowandová, Helena ; Mravcová, Marie (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The thesis describes, interpretes and compares these three collections of short stories of Czech literature of the 1st half of the 20th century: F. Langer: Snílci a vrahové, M. V. Kratochvíl: Povídky lásky a smrti, M. Součková: Škola povídek. Annotated Translation: foreword to Sartre, J.-P.: L'Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions (Arnaud Thomès, Hermann, 2010, pp. 9-28)
Dvořák, Jan ; Duběda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
This bachelor thesis consists of the Czech translation of a part of Arnaud Tomès's foreword to J.-P. Sartre's essay Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions (Sketch for a Theory of the Emotions) and of a theoretic annotation of this translation. The source text was written for a 2010 reprint of Sartre's essay and comprises a thorough analysis of Sartre's conception of emotions based upon E. Husserl's phenomenology. The annotation, which centres on the source text's analysis, the applied translation method and procedures together with encountered translation problems, is based upon an adapted version of Christiane Nord's Model and the Theory of Functional Equivalence as described by Dagmar Knittl. Ladislav Fuks: The Duchess and the Art of Cookery - Appearance of Biedermeier?
Součková Linhartová, Ladislava ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
This thesis is an attempt to interpret the novel of Ladislav Fuks - The duchess and the art of cookery. It is focused on the relationship of its fictional world with culture and with the philosophy of biedermeier. Biedermeier is thought to be a value stream, a harmonizing approach to life, and also a method, which prefers idylls. The analytic source is Gérard Genette's theory of transtextuality, chosen because of Fuks's distinctive intertextuality of his work.
Literary, cultural and historical influences in the works and beliefs of Oscar Wilde
Lorenzů, Alex ; Beran, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Quinn, Justin (referee)
The thesis deals with the cultural and literary influences that can be traced in the works of Oscar Wilde. Its aim is to map out and elucidate some of the important motifs of the author's work and aesthetics in their own context as well as in the wider cultural-historical one. The methods used will be comparison of relevant materials, analysis of certain expressions typical of the author with their connotations, explaining the intertextual allusions in Wilde's work, and historical sources. The requisite attention will also be paid to Wilde as a representative of a subversive element of Victorian society and how this relates to his sexuality; that is to say, exploring the issue of the tabooing of non-heterosexuality, which may have been a decisive factor in Wilde's criticism of the conventions of his era and to his search of positive role-models in the ancient tradition both for his art and for his personal philosophy. Keywords Ancient Greece, ancient Rome, fin-de-siecle, homosexuality, intertextuality, l'art pour l'art, LGBTQ*, Marius the Epicurean, metatextuality, non-heterosexuality, Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Victorian era, Walter Pater.
