Frajtová, Věra ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This Bachelor thesis aims to analyze the principle of democratization of culture in the conception of André Malraux, the first French Minister of culture, who held the office between 1959 and 1969. Democratization of culture has represented one of the main pillars of French cultural policy since its origins in 1959 when the first French Ministry of Culture was established. The first chapter explains under which circumstances this Ministry of Cultural Affairs was created. Also, it presents the state institutions that were affecting the cultural domain during this period. It shows how democratization of culture was set up as a priority of the newly established Ministry. The second chapter analyzes the official speeches by André Malraux and tries to define the main points of his conception. Next, the chapter shows how these crucial aspects were transformed into the political program of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The last chapter presents the project of maisons de la culture, new cultural centers symbolizing the whole Malraux's era. Realization of the project brought to light some difficulties that became the sources of criticisms of Malraux's policy. These criticisms shown in the last part of the work serve till today as an important reference for the development of French cultural policy.
