This bachelor thesis focuses on the legend of the Holy Grail, namely on its high version La Queste del Saint Graal, and tries to put it into the context of the historical, cultural and spiritual process in the western Europe of the 11th - 13th century. The thesis firstly describes the general political and social situation in the western Europe's High Middle Ages, then it pays attention to the contemporary spiritual and intellectual process, after that it characterizes the chivalric culture and literature and finally it concerns itself with the developement of the very legend of the Holy Grail and the analysis of La Queste del Saint Graal. The symbolism and spirituality of this high work from the Arthurian legend field is linked with the monastic and particulary cistercian spirituality of the 12th century, but it is also pointed out, that it grows as well from the specifics of the chivalric spirituality. The thesis tries to find a place, which La Queste del Saint Graal occupies in the medieval christian cultural tradition.
