Development of Social and Personal Competences through Canonical Literary Works at Upper secondary school

The thesis tries to suggest, describe and evaluate five different literature lessons for children in grammar schools. These are built upon the principles of developing personal and social competence. It aims to prove it is possible to strive for higher standards of education during even classes of literature. Based on canonical literary works such as The Mother, A Streetcar Named Desire, Of Mice and Men, Sophie's Choice and classical drama pupils learn cooperation, argumentation, to draw conclusions and so on during the lessons, in full accordance with the Framework Education Programme for Secondary General Education (Grammar Schools). In the first part the author tries to contemplate the potential of literature in regard to personal development of pupils. She tries to outline, based on research, why competence, personal and social competence specifically, is so important. In the second part she tries to come up with five different lessons which aim to further one's competence. Thanks to a questionnaire handed out during and after the lessons she assesses their worth and proposes certain alterations. The author, thanks to the questionnaire and her own self-reflection, reaches a conclusion that such a method of teaching really develops pupils' competence. The thesis also includes a colorful...

Incorporating the theme of virtues into teaching pupils in primary school

This master's thesis deals with virtues of first grade primary school pupils. The theoretical part is focused on explanation of the term "virtues" and on description of individual areas in which the virtues can appear within education in first grade of primary school. The attention is paid to how the topic "virtues" is related to the goals and contents formulated in "RVP ZP" (General education programme for primary school education). In this part I also focus on introduction of context of ethics, where I concentrate on theories of Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg, and ethics education. Furthermore, there are programmes, projects and aids mentioned in this thesis, which deal with development of virtues, with education to values and with ethics education. The practical part of this thesis consists of active research. In the research are stated four lessons which deal with the way, this topic can be realised as a content of education and the way the pupils understand this topic. I also deal with virtues of respect and empathy in detail. These education units which develop the topics of virtues are suggested, verified and reflected.
