The thesis deals with the development and prospects of the hegemonic U.S. position and analyzes the ability of its rivals to compete in hegemonic position. The first chapter introduces the fundamental theory and history related to the concept of hegemony, the second chapter compares the position and influence of the USA and its selected rivals in the world economy on the basis of individual attributes of hegemony and the third chapter examines the role of USD as the key world currency and possible alternatives to the current configuration of the international monetary system.

The diploma thesis analyzes monetary policy in relation to the global imbalances in the world economy. The first chapter deals with historical development of the international monetary system and with effectiveness of monetary policy in the current monetary system. Chapter two defines global imbalances and focuses on their development and specifics. It also examines their connection to the monetary policy of the most important countries in the world economy. The last chapter discusses objectives of monetary policy in the modern world and suggests possible measures to reduce the global imbalances.

The aim of this thesis is to compare the position of the U.S. dollar and the euro in the world economy and to describe possible changes in it in the future. The first part deals with the main factors that influence the role of a currency in the world economy and with international functions of a currency. The second chapter shortly introduces history of both of the currencies. The third part of this thesis focuses on the current position of the dollar and the euro and their role in the world economy. The last chapter outlines the possible future development of the international monetary system and of the position of the dollar and the euro.

This thesis analyzes the current position of the U.S. dollar in the global economy. The first chapter focuses on the historical evolution of the position of the dollar against the background of the development of the whole international monetary system. The main part is focused on the current status of the dollar, which is examined on three fundamental functions of money - a store of value, unit of account and medium of exchange. The last chapter deals with possible scenario for the future status of the dollar.

The first part is dedicated to the dollar and its role in the Bretton Woods system, the dollar standard and the current dollar situation. The second part is about the American dollar and its function as a trade and reserve currency. The third part shortly describes the difficulties of the American economy and the future perspectives of the dollar. The last chapter is devoted to a brief prediction of the evolution of the American economy and the influence of that evolution on the position of the dollar within the international monetary system.
