Multilingualism and Interculturality in international or interregional projects and work environments.
MICHELIN, Anais Marie Christelle
The master thesis aimed to find out structural and individual strategies of managing multilingualism and interculturality within the BOKU - International Relations working team. In the first part of this work I set up a theoretical research framework focused on the following key topics : intercultural management, intercultural competence, intercultural teams, communication and challenges. The last part of the theoretical part describes the existing models about the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences working environment I referred to. Empirical data were collected using data triangulation through document analysis and qualitative semi-structured interviews to demonstrate the structural and individual strategies of managing multilingualism and interculturality of six BOKU-IR team members. They were then analyzed by sequences and transcribed with the software FOLKER according to the convention GAT2. The results show an overview of the intercultural management and the strategies used to deal with multilingualism and interculturality within the BOKU- International Relational working environment.
Multilingualism and interculturality in international or interregional projects and work environments
MIRAMON, Christelle
Mastering communication is the key to successful project management. While stressing the importance of communication within any working team has become a commonplace, the latter seems often helpless when it comes to implementing this principle on-site. In addition, there an ongoing requirement for pre-existing communication management methods to be continuously adapted to ever-changing work environments. First of all, in today's globalized society, the frequencies of intercultural interactions have dramatically increased and international teams have become mainstream within the workplaces. Therefore, interculturalism is nowadays a core issue in internal communication as well as a challenge for the coworkers' cooperation and productivity. Furthermore, in the digital age, information and communication technologies (ICT) are introducing new opportunity for extending the scope of cooperation beyond borders so that interregional projects rely increasingly often on remote teams. However, the virtual space transforms the interaction modes between the individuals and, unlike in a physical space, tailored strategies regarding the communication is necessary to ensure group cohesion. The following research focuses on a case study of the communication management within an international remote team. This case offers a point of departure to analyze cross-effects of both interculturality and virtuality on the communicative effectiveness between the working partners as well as their overall impacts on the project progress. Besides, the given team proves to have little knowledge in basic communication management, hence this case study aims to evaluate the different aspects of the project management process that could be affected by the lack of an appropriate communication strategy. Then, the results of the data analysis will be confronted with the scientific literature in an attempt to find some problem-solving communication management practices that would especially applies to intercultural and virtual working teams.
The Topos of Being on the Way in selected prosaic works of Peter Henisch
KÜGEL KARKUŠOVÁ, Petra
This study in literary sciences conducts an analysis of selected prosaic works published by the Austrian author Peter Henisch. The study evokes the affirmation that the author makes use of a literary strategy in his writings which consists of four universal topics. These universal topics may be depicted as Grenzenüberschreiten (crossing borders), Generationenkonflikt (conflicts between generations), Gesellschaftskritik (criticizing society) and Interkulturalität (interculturality). The said topics are summarized by the commonplace {--} respectively topos {--} `Being on the way{\crq}, in German language expressed as Unterwegssein. Each of them plays a dominant role within the novels `Die kleine Figur meines Vaters{\crq} (1975), `Schwarzer Peter{\crq} (2000) and `Die schwangere Madonna{\crq} (2005) which are subject to text-based interpretation. The analysis is carried out in two steps. First, after having precisely defined the four universal topics, citations from the texts prove evidence of certain aspects of said topics. Second, the method of parallel comparison (Parallelstellenmethode) examines these aspects to show consistence between citations throughout the selected novels. The outcome of comparison confirms that several aspects are equally used in all of the three novels and that some aspects show up in one or two novels only, confirming the existence of universal topics as well. Thus, the chosen methodology approves the persistent use of all four topics. Finally, this prove of evidence verifies the affirmation of a literary strategy.
