Gentrification in the post-socialist context of Central Europe. Comparative case study - Warsaw and Prague

The thesis deals with the issue of gentrification in the post-socialist context of Central Europe. This phenomenon occurs mainly in the inner city districts, where the local social structure is disturbed through the physical upgrade of the neighborhood (e.g. flats, shops and restaurants) by pushing out the poorer layers of society by the more wealthy ones. In the cities marked by the communist urban planning, the inner city parts were neglected at the expense of peripheral prefab concrete buildings, thus creating great potential for local investment after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The process of gentrification is illustrated in this paper by the comparison of the two city districts Praga-Północ (Warsaw) and Prague 7 (Prague) in the time between 1989 and 2017. As a starting point for comparison, a special case of Prenzlauer Berg district in Berlin is used, where the process has shown significant impact already in the 1990s. In this respect the aim of the thesis is to investigate the links between Warsaw and Prague, also how these cases differ. At the same time, the role of the public sector is studied as a relevant factor influencing gentrification in the post-socialist region of Central Europe. Gentrification and revitalisation of built-up area of the inner city of Ceske Budejovice with emphasis on Prazske predmesti

Bachelor thesis deals with the processes of gentrification and revitalisation of environment in different parts of the disrict Prazske predmesti, which lies in the inner part of city of Ceske Budejovice. Includes an analysis of the relevant literature and theory, urban characteristics of study parts, working methods and results. Gentrification was examined by asking respondents, revitalisation of buldings based on field descriptions of the individual houses. It was found a considerable representation gentrifiers in population in the Prazske predmesti, but only some were unambiguous gentrifiers. Revitalisation of buldings in the Prazske predmesti is signifiant progress, it has built the kondominium are numerus and little part houses have sign sof neglect. Study parts of the Prazske predmesti were compared with other parts of the inner city study in the bachelor´s thesis. Bachelor thesis contains a tables with the evaluation of the respondents, houses and study areas and mapping of this evaluation.
Gentrification in the context of revitalization of inner city of Bratislava

GENTRIFICATION IN THE CONTEXT OF REVITALIZATION OF INNER CITY OF BRATISLAVA Inner city of Bratislava is currently experiencing the revitalization processes which share similarities with the process of gentrification witnessed in many other advanced capitalist cities as well as postsocialist cities. Aim of this study is to analyse situation in Bratislava in a complex way and to respond on a question, if there is gentrification happening in the Capital of Slovakia, what is its extent, character and a general influence in the context of revitalization of the inner city. For these purposes, more types of research methods are used, in which social, physical and functional image of the selected area with the biggest potential for gentrification is observed, views and motivations of the local actors are explored and signs of possible conflicts are analysed. By that study also aims to extend and deepen the knowledge about the mechanisms of transformation of postsocialist cities. Key words: Gentrification, postsocialist city, Bratislava
Gentrification of Karlin district. Current status of physical environment and sociodemographic and economic development after 2002

The aim of the thesis is to find out if then Prague quarter of Karlin has been under the process of gentrification recently. Karlin is an inner city and has been going through dynamic changes in the last thirteen years. This is not only because of post-socialist transformation but the regeneration was also accelerated by dealing with the consequences of the flood in 2002. Different census areas of Karlin are classified into three categories according to the degree of gentrification: gentrified, ungentrified and below average areas. The research is based on the results summarizing a field research which determined physical condition of the houses, the result of analyses of ownership and price levels of Karlin houses and the development of sociodemographic and economic structure. This diploma thesis is about residents who live in the Lesser Town, the historic center of Prague. It focuses on the changes perceived by residents that took place during their lifetime. Work is based on literature and qualitative research in the form of biographical interviews. The theoretical part deals with the concepts of identity, tourism, gentrification, genius loci and ageing which are essential for understanding the changes identified in the analytical part. The analytical part is divided into seven units: changes of the atmosphere of the Lesser Town, its inhabitants, living environment, housing stock, changes of people who have shared their stories with me and more global changes that had influenced the Lesser Town. The work also describes which problems and benefits related to life in the Lesser Town do communication partners perceive.
Gentrification and revitalization of inner city buildings in the city of České Budějovice with emphasis on the Pražské předměstí - west

Revitalization of the inner city buildings in the city of České Budějovice and current gentrification of these buildings are the subject of investigation in this bachelor thesis. After an analysis of literature and theory followes a description of solved areas of inner city and chapter with data collection and methodology. In this thesis there are analyzed interviews with the residents on the topic of gentrification and there are accomplished mapping of individual houses of rate their revitalization. The data are sorted and processed into several types of typologies of gentrification and buildings revitalization. Study area is three residential areas of west part of Prague suburb that is part of inner city of České Budějovice. In the first area with housing estate there was register revitalization of panel houses and superiority of residents with neutral state in terms of gentrification. The second area represented mostly newly built condominiums with gentrifiers and neutral residents. In the third area with older buildings there is gradually buildings revitalization and construction of new condominiums, there is still a mixed composition of the residents in terms of socio-economic status.

Brewery premises waiting for its time once again to raise their fate. The proposal deals with thinning adequate space for the return of the former grandeur of the castle courtyard. Take the power of its current and cumbersome, and bring back into the historic character of the former in the form of vertical predatory towers and all the socio-eco-logical aspects.
Social and building aspects of gentrification in inner city of České Budějovice

This thesis focuses on the issue of gentrification, and the associated revitalization of buildings. The introductory chapters characterize the process of gentrification / revitalization as such and deal with selected residential areas of the inner city of České Budějovice. The social aspects of gentrification have been investigated recently in the study area and the results of these analyses were used in this work. A field surfy of the revitalization of buildings associated with gentrification was carried out using pre-criterial characteristics evaluating particularly the outercasing of buildings and thein external equipment, as well as follow-up front and rearbuilding environment. The values of the determined criterial characteristics revitalization of the buildings were entered into tables, analyzed and synthesized in the types of revitalization and subsequently entered into maps. In particular form, nature, scope and diversity of the revitalization of buildings in seven areas of the inner city of České Budějovice have been assesed. The observed revitalization was then compared with the previously analyzed gentrification.
Characteristics of inner-city Ceske Budejovice residents on the background of gentrification process

This thesis compares answers of inhabitants living in the inner city of Ceske Budejovice in the background of gentrification process. There were carried out 75 standardized interviews with residents in 7 different inner city areas that were later evaluated. The respondents were sorted into groups ? those having gentrificant?s characteristics and other living in the area. Then we examined the differences in their answers. We have also observed the differences in answers of residents living in each researched area. Gentrification is stronger in area 2 ? New houses next Perla ? Holeckova´s street than in other areas. A part of this work is the analysis of literature relating to gentrification.
