Fatefulness in the Art of Horacio Quiroga's Short Story

This master's thesis aims to compare Horacio Quiroga's short story with a general theory of the short story and to juxtapose it with Quiroga's own Ten Rules for the Perfect Storyteller. The first theoretical part looks at the short story from the point of view of literary history with a special focus on the differences between a short story and a novel. It goes on to give a short overview of the literary development in Latin America, outlining specific features of the given area and their influence on Horacio Quiroga's works. A separate chapter covers the Hispanic - American fantasy short story, its general principles and some examples of Horacio Quiroga's works. In the next chapter the paper refers to Quiroga's essays concerning theories of the short story, particularly Ten Rules for the Perfect Storyteller, aiming to introduce the theoretical concept of Quiroga's art of storytelling. Ten Rules for the Perfect Storyteller provides the paper with the background to interpret a number of selected Quiroga's short stories as well as to compare the theories of the short story between Horacio Quiroga and Edgar Allan Poe. This bachelor thesis deals with the term fantastic tale and its modifications in Czech and foreign literary production from the end of the 19th century. The starting point is the work of writer Karel Švanda from Semčice (Fantastic Tales, 1892; Bizarre Tales, 1897) who was not only a creator of fantastic tales but also a translator. Specifically, he translated the work of E. T. A. Hoffmann into Czech language, whose tales are essential for the genre of fantastic literature. Besides Švanda's work, this thesis focuses also on its contemporary reception.

Thematic and motivic analysis of Fantastic Tales by I. U. Tarchetti

The aim of the bachelor thesis is at first to introduce I. U. Tarchetti, less well-known author in our country, and historical context which he worked in. The thesis starts with an introduction to fantastic tale as a literary genre, than a practical part follows that is devoted to thematic and motivic analysis of Fantastic Tales. It describes characteristic motifs in the level of characters, settings and plot.
