The issue of evaluating and alleviating pain in the elderly in nursing homes
PANOVA, Vladislava
The bachelor's thesis "The issue of evaluating and alleviating pain in the elderly in nursing homes" deals with research into the nursing care of elderly people with pain who are permanently housed in social facilities, so-called nursing homes. The research was conducted in selected homes for the nursing homes in the South Bohemian Region. The thesis consists of two parts: theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part is divided into 3 individual chapters. The first is about gerontology and geriatrics, it describes different perspectives on aging, aspects of old age, society's view on the elderly, etc. The second clarifies the concept of pain and related areas: anatomy and physiology, collection of patient history, therapy, etc. The third tells about social facilities and legislation. The empirical part was carried out by a qualitative research investigation, using a semistructured interview method. Data analysis took place in the form of open coding, using the "pencil and paper" method. The codes created further were classified into individual categories and subcategories. According to the obtained data, we can say that nurses are well informed about the methods of pain assessment of their clients based on standardized methods and personal experience while working with them. They know well the pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods of pain relief and they are excellent at cooperating with the members of the multidisciplinary team who oversee implementing some of the given methods. In addition to the good aspects, the lack of a certain standard for the assessment of pain in seniors suffering from dementia syndrome is discovered, which needs to be created in the future not only for social, but also for medical facilities. The results of the bachelor's thesis can be used for further research in the field of nurses' work in social facilities and nursing care for elderly people with pain and inability to express themselves verbally.

Satisfaction of clients in retirement homes with nursing care
KOTKOVÁ, Stanislava
The diploma thesis " Satisfaction of clients in retirement homes with nursing care" maps out clients´ contentment in nursing homes and simultaneously also how general nurses influence this contentment. With extending lifespan, the number of seniors who need institutionalised care is growing. Placing a senior in a nursing home and thus leaving his/her original home can influence his/her general contentment. The theoretical part deals with the changes in old age, nursing care of seniors, communication with seniors and contentment. The research part was implemented through a quantitative research construct with seniors through a structured interview based on a questionnaire. The second part was implemented through a qualitative research construct with general nurses through an in-depth interview. The aim of quantitative part of the thesis was to detect clients´ contentment with provided nursing care in nursing homes. There were 3 hypotheses determined. H1: Clients´ contentment in nursing home changes depending on gender. Based on the research construct, it emerged that contentment of nursing home clients does not change depending on gender; therefore, this hypothesis was refused. H2: Nursing personnel influences positively contentment of nursing home clients. Based on the research construct, it emerged that the nursing personnel influences positively contentment of nursing home clients, therefore this hypothesis was confirmed. H3: Contentment of nursing home clients changes depending on their self-sufficiency. This hypothesis was neither confirmed nor refused. Based on the research construct, it emerged that the clients´ contentment changes partially, depending on their self-sufficiency. The aim of the qualitative part was to identify factors influencing contentment of nursing home clients from the point of view of a nurse. For this target, one research question was determined. RQ1: How can nurses influence contentment of nursing home clients? From results it emerged that nurses can influence contentment of nursing home clients by all what they do for clients by their willingness and helpfulness. It was revealed that clients´ contentment is influenced not only by providing essential biological needs, such as hygiene, help with eating and hydration. Clients´ contentment is influenced by nurses´ presence and well-elected communication. From the research construct, it emerged that communication is perceived by nurses as one of the basic factors of contentment. The reason of this fact is that communication helps to get closer and thus the clients can feel more like at home. Furthermore, it emerged that seniors are influenced by nursing personnel, decent dealing and handling as well as by the environment where they live. The obtained results might be provided for the management of nursing homes and thus they might contribute to better quality of provided nursing care. Based on the results, an interactive seminar with nurses might be organised, which would focus, for example, on the field of communication, manipulation or self-sufficiency support of the clients.
