The Chouans in Victor Hugo's novels
Sobotka, Ondřej ; Pohorský, Aleš (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the depiction of Chouans and the Vendée wars in Victor Hugo's novels. We concentrated on his novel Quatrevingt-Treize. On the basis of current historical knowledge, we made a comparison of the version given in Hugo's novel. Then we focused on the significance attributed to Chouans by Hugo with refference to his political views. In the first place, we described in short the circumstances of the creation of Quatrevingt-Treize and its place in the context of the author's life. Then we outlined the character of the Vendée rebellion. Afterwards we compared Hugo's version of combats in Vendée region with its possible historic inspirations. In the second part of this thesis, we analysed the principal Chouan characters. We examined the significance of the Vendée rebellion represented by Lantenac's character in light of Hugo's political beliefs. We came to conclusion that in Hugo's approach they are not seen uniquely from a historico-political point of view. They are depicted as an integral part of the historical evolution of mankind and therefore are not mere defendants of feudal order. The key element is Lantenac's capacity to neglect the historical and political conditions of his own existence. Victor Hugo thus includes Chouans in his vision of future social conciliation.
Jaroslav Vrchlickýs Translations from the French and Italy Literature.
VICIÁNOVÁ, Klára
In my master's thesis I inquire into Jaroslav Vrchlický's translation of French poetry. In five chapters I analyse Vrchlický's translations of the poems by the Parnasists José-Maria de Heredia, Sully Prudhomme, Leconte de Lisle and François Coppée; the fifth is the romantic author Victor Hugo. The analyses are preceded by a bibliographic-descriptive part, an overview of Vrchlický's studies related to the poet in question and reception of Vrchlický's translations in contemporary periodicals. The summarizing chapters describe Vrchlický's translation method and the relationship of F. X. Šalda as the leading figure of contemporary literary criticism to Jaroslav Vrchlický. A substantial part of the work is a bibliographical index of Vrchlický's translations of French poetry published in books and journals as well as a list of his critical studies. As information source we have used the digitalized card catalogue Retrobi available online at the website of the Institute of Czech Literature, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
Biblical Themes in the Legend of the Centuries by Victor Hugo
JELENOVÁ, Lenka
This diploma thesis deals with the role of biblical themes in the collection of poems The Legend of the Centuries by Victor Hugo. First chapter pursues selected aspects of the collection (humanistic values, conception of history, character and time aspects). The aim of the second chapter is to put the collection into the literary context of the concerned period (romantism, symbolism) and into the context of the author's philosophical and religious ideas. This part considers the relation among the collection, the myth and the psychoanalysis. Focus of the thesis lies in the third part that analyzes selected poems of the collection. These are classified according to the role of biblical aspects. The first type of Hugo's application of the biblical elements is represented by an opening poem of the collection "La Vision d'ou est sorti ce livre", which refers to the biblical stories, characters and themes via different poetic techniques. The second group of poems represents a direct updating of the biblical stories. The last type unifies the author's convictions with the biblical elements and recreates the so-called biblical poems. The aim of the thesis is to research this new type of myths that Victor Hugo creates throughout the biblical themes.
