Impact of Organized Crime on the Press Freedom: Comparison of Mexico and Colombia

This bachelor thesis deals with selected elements of organized crime and its impact on the freedom of the press. The thesis aims to confirm or refute the hypothesis that organized crime impacts press freedom using a qualitative comparative case study analysis of selected countries. As mentioned above, organized crime is such a complex concept that it is essential to define the specific actors or elements of this criminal activity. This paper focuses on selected actors, which are organized criminal groups - drug cartels and corruption as an element of organized crime. The research questions the thesis seeks to answer are "How do drug cartels affect the freedom of the press?" and "How does corruption affect press freedom?". If the hypothesis is confirmed, the author will seek to answer the additional sub-question, "How do Mexico and Colombia approach the impact of organized crime on press freedom?". The results of the thesis confirm the hypothesis and conclude that organized crime impacts press freedom. The two specific sources of this influence, i.e., drug cartels and corruption, affect press freedom mainly through extensive violence against journalists, thus having a systematic and long-term negative impact on their security. Freedom of pressindices and their reflection in media

The thesis presents a contribution to the topic of critical examination of various ways to evaluate and compare the level of press (media) freedom in countries throughout the world. It analyses the process of presentation the conclusions of press freedom indices to the public. The analysis is guided on two levels. First, the form in which the press freedom indices are published is investigated. And second, the media reflection of these publications is examined. The starting-point of this analysis focuses on theoretical view on various definitions of press freedom. First part of the thesis therefore provides the summary of important fields that should not be forgotten by any conceptualization of press freedom. Second chapter deals with the problems connected to evaluations and comparisons of press freedom in general and then in particular concerning the Freedom of the Press index by Freedom House and World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders. In the second part of the thesis, Czech media reflection of the two concerned indices is analyzed. First, the specifics of the Czech media landscape are dealt with. Formation of free press in Albania afterfall of communism

The Master thesis focuses itself on establishment and development of free press and other media in Albania during the period since the fall of communism till today. Along with the gradual losing of power of communist regime since 1990 that culminated in 1992 by the establishment of democratic government, new era of Albanian media started, an era filled by dynamic changes and twists that have impact on the media up to these days. The aim of the author is to describe this development and to assess how Albanian media faced it and thus influenced current shape and functioning of the media market. Apart from describing the media scene in the 1990s and 2000s, specifically the establishment and development of main Albanian media as well as political and economic situation of the country, the main goal of the thesis lies in assessing the degree of independence of current Albanian press and describing of work conditions of local journalists. The main source to do that were the interviews conducted with Albanian journalists commenting mainly the issues of freedom of speech and press in their own country as well as conditions of their everyday work and thus revealing functioning of media and other sectors in this Balkan country.
