Media landscape in Spain
Michálková, Helena ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Provecho López, Juan Ignacio (referee)
The diploma thesis "The media landscape in Spain" aims to describe the contemporary Spanish media scene and apply the basic characteristics and particularities of the "polarized pluralist model" media system which was described by Hallin and Mancini in their book Comparing Media Systems and whose features are also allocated to other South European countries (Italy, Portugal, Greece and marginally also France) in addition to Spain. The description of the press and audiovisual media market itself is preceded by three extensive chapters dealing with press media development in Spain from its beginnings in the 17th century until today, media legislation and the concentration of media ownership. It was the development of the press (and, in the 20th century, the development of audiovisual media) which, due to its exceptionally close ties to politics, determined the shape of the contemporary Spanish media landscape, which is why the thesis focuses primarily on this topic. The historical and political development of the country and constantly changing systems of government led to frequent changes in law (press laws in particular), which makes Spain very different from other European countries in this aspect. The chapters dealing with the press and audiovisual media market refer to the weak tradition of...
State ownership and ownership concentration as determinants of dividend policy
Picálek, Jan ; Čornanič, Aleš (advisor) ; Malinská, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor thesis complements the existing research on implications of various ownership structures on dividend policy. It extends the literature focused on state ownership and its impact on dividend amount paid out to shareholders for testing such relationship in the environment of EU listed stock market and EU government agencies, scope so far lacking in the scientific literature. Moreover, it provides new way of testing agency theory of dividends by adopting Herfindahl's index as proxy of ownership concentration. Therefore, interaction between shareholders is accounted for as opposed to the commonly used proxy largest shareholder. As a result, this thesis helps to explain relations between various ownership structure characteristics and dividend policies. Primary econometric methods, panel data estimation methods, of this thesis found significantly positive relationship between state owned enterprises and the amount of profit distributed among shareholders. Compared to existing research on emerging economy of China, less evidence is found. Therefore, I argue that tunnelling tendencies in EU are substantially lower due to level of market development and minority investor protection in EU. The results also back up the agency theory, however, its influence is found to be lower than proposed by...

Polarization of the Czech Media Landscape after 2013: Discourse Analysis of New Media ProjectsPolarization of the Czech Media Landscape after 2013: Discourse Analysis of New Media Projects
Lebedová, Veronika ; Pudlák, Štěpán (advisor) ; Řehořová, Irena (referee)
The thesis deals with the polarization of Czech media landscape after 2013 as a discursive construct. Our topic is the emergence of new media projects, responding to the takeover of MAFRA by Andrej Babis. Three of these are being discussed: Echo24.cz, Reportér and Neovlivní.cz. The thesis aims to describe the discourse of the alternative media, its own representation in current situation. The subject is based on several concepts. First of them is the theory of social responsibility, which is a strong social value despite being quite questionable. Then, we discuss the trend of media ownership concentration and the development of Czech media after 1989, which has come to important changes, such as the change of the overall model of media ownership and the polarization of the media landscape itself. The first part of the thesis serves as a contextual background for the critical discourse analysis. The analysis verifies the hypothesis as follows: Alternative media is defined in opposition to the mainstream and uses the arguments based on the principles of the social responsibility theory to represent its own position, goals and interests. As a result, we found out, that the new projects construct an opposition us versus them as independence versus oligarchization. At the same time, the principles of...
