Integration of Nepalese living in České Budějovice.
KORANDOVÁ, Tereza
The aim of the work was to find out how Nepalis living in České Budějovice are integrated in selected areas (language skills, education, work included in the community in their place of residence). Another goal was to describe how they maintain their cultural customs, traditions, and possibly religion. Find out if and how they use social services offered by selected organizations in České Budějovice. A qualitative research strategy was chosen using the methodology. The research group consists of Nepalis, especially those who run "Indian restaurants" in České Budějovice, but also their family members. Information was obtained from informants through interviews according to the instructions. The questions focused on the process of integration of foreigners from their subjective point of view into Czech society in selected areas. Data collection took place by deliberate selection of Nepalis living in České Budějovice legally. Because Nepalis live in communities here, they have similar customs, traditions and hobbies. The research was already saturated with 8 informants, no new categories of responses appeared during coding. According to the statistics of the MVČR (2020), a large number of Nepalis do not live in České Budějovice (only 39). Nevertheless, they want to integrate and function as regular citizens. In this process, however, they face a number of obstacles that do not make it easier for them to integrate into society. The contribution of the work is a description of the integration of Nepalis in České Budějovice with the possibility of insight into their experience, the effort to find friends and enjoy life in a country unknown to them. Another benefit is the characteristics of the built background, which the Nepalis created here. This can serve as a screening for employees of non-profit organizations, who could possibly try to establish cooperation with Nepalis and help them remove barriers to integration.
Online harassment among male and female journalists in Nepal and its impact on their work
Manandhar, Akriti ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
Online harassment of journalists is a growing concern worldwide as more journalists report burnouts, fatigue and desire to quit journalism. This research was based on in-depth interviews of five male and five female Nepali journalists. It aimed at investigating the forms of online harassment journalists face in Nepal, the impacts it has on them and the strategies they employ to deal with it. It was of research interest to examine differences in harassment experiences of male and female journalists. Results showed the common forms of harassment journalists face are cyberstalking, sexual harassment, gendered harassment, manipulation and intimidation. Due to this, journalists decreased social media usage and self-censored themselves on it. It led to fears of physical harm, judgement and being discredited. Most interviewed journalists ignored it considering it a part of their job. Complaining about harassment bore no positive results. Women from the sample faced comparatively more sexual and gendered harassment, with harassment being more personal and of higher intensity. This had adverse impacts on some female interviewees leading them to quit social media and the profession altogether, which further increases gender gap in the heavily male-dominated industry. Younger and less experienced journalists...
Ecology of orchids and other potential pharmaceutical plants in Nepal
Rokaya Timsina, Binu ; Kindlmann, Pavel (advisor) ; Whigham, Dennis (referee) ; Kull, Tiiu (referee)
In this thesis, I focused mainly on orchids and also carried out some research on different pharmaceutically potential plants in Nepal. I compiled both data from field and secondary data sources and one of my first outputs was complete checklist of orchids in Nepal. I also studied distribution patterns and affinities of orchids with different floristic regions in Nepal. My next work on epiphytic orchids is related to diversity, distribution and host- species associations and their future in the context of climate change in Nepal. In addition to this, I also worked on factors affecting epiphytic orchids along an altitudinal gradient in central Nepal. Working on population dynamics of terrestrial orchid species, Crepidium acuminatum, lasted for 6 years. Together with orchids, I determined secondary compounds present in a highly important Nepal endemic medicinal plant, Swertia multicaulis. I also compiled the information on uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicity of highly important Himalayan endemic medicinal plant, Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora. The last research of my Ph.D. project ended up by gathering the information on uses of different medicinal plants, including orchids that were used to treat various gastrointestinal diseases in Nepal. The results of my doctoral thesis are presented...
Implication of snow leopard distribution, population dynamics and landscape genetics, and prey preference for its conservation in Nepal
Shrestha, Bikram ; Kindlmann, Pavel (advisor) ; Sedláček, František (referee) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with an endangered large mammal species - snow leopard, its distribution, population dynamics, landscape genetics and connectivity, trophic ecology and human-snow leopard conflicts in the Nepalese Himalaya (Sagarmatha National Park (SNP), Lower Mustang (LM) and Upper Manang (UM) in the Annapurna Conservation Area, during Wet and Dry seasons in 2014-2016. In the case of snow leopard study, we used data obtained from camera traps, scat's genetic analysis and monitoring of fresh pugmarks and scrapes while direct count method was used to study for its main prey, blue sheep and Himalayan tahr. In study 1, we assessed the determinants of habitat suitability of snow leopards using MaxEnt model and mapped the distribution of suitable habitat for snow leopards in Nepal. Altitude and Annual mean temperature are important common factors contributing to snow leopard habitat suitability within the area studied, which is indicated by both the percentage contribution of environmental variables and Jackknife test from MaxEnt model. Some other uncommon factors also seem to play a role, as they were important in at least one of the analyses. These were: distance from road, and precipitation of driest month but their importance has to be considered with caution. In study 2, we present our...
Evaluation of natural hazards of glacial Lake, Nepal
Kroczek, Tomáš ; Vilímek, Vít (advisor) ; Kalvoda, Jan (referee)
Current dynamic of global climate change is the trigger of new natural processes such as glacial lake outburst floods. One example is lake Imja located in the hinterland of Mt. Everest. Outburst of lake Imja would have undoubtedly negative impact on financial and cultural climate of attached area. This diploma thesis is focusing on the various factors and its imapct on the stability of moraine. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate possibility of impact of rockfall into the lake, to monitor the development of its expansion in comparison with growing temperatures in last 60 years and also to assess the development of morphology of moraine containing dead ice. The results of the thesis indicate accelerating expansion of the lake at the expense of the Imja and Lhotse Shar glaciers, for which the rising means of temperatures of the months in the warm half of the year are particularly important. The results also show that there is no risk of producing wave after impact of rockfall into the lake, as the lateral moraines are sufficiently high to protect the lake. The crucial factor for the stability of the moraine dam is the melting of dead ice in its core, where new and new thermokarst lakes are forming on the surface of the moraine and a seepage through the moraine in its southwestern part has also...

Diversita, rozšíření a ochrana léčivých rostlin v Nepálu
Rokaya, Maan Bahadur ; Münzbergová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Doležal, Jiří (referee) ; Kindlmann, Pavel (referee)
In this thesis I synthesized different aspects related to diversity, distribution, uses and conservation of medicinal plants in Nepal and also have attempted to recommend guidelines for sustainability of two highly used alpine plant species. The over-harvesting or human induced activities are not the only problem for biodiversity but recently invasion of alien species has also emerged as serious problem in Nepal. I thus also attempted to analyze the effect of invasive species on community composition in the last paper. The first two papers deal with diversity, distribution, uses and harvesting. Paper I showed that medicinal plants in Nepal have unimodal relationship with elevation and the maximum total species richness is at 1000 m. Paper II which deals with the uses of medicinal plants in the Humla region, west Nepal showed that there are 161 medicinal plant species belonging to 61 families and 106 genera used for treating 72 human and 7 veterinary ailments. Medicinal plants in Humla were mostly collected in wild. This induces a serious threat to diversity of the medicinal plants and it is therefore necessary to develop proper management guidelines for their harvesting in wild and/or their domestication. Rheum australe, an endemic plant to west Himalayan region, is widely used plant in traditional...
